Together Mindy Stone and David Pomeroy have both respectively been a part of successful Division II programs and collectively decided there is a way to bring together Division II teams from around the country to play in one location during the season, outside of the National Tournament. The Co-Chairs, Ms. Stone and Mr. Pomeroy, decided to name the tournament the Pomerstone Classic which is sponsored by STX and TST Media.

The tournament will include a total of 12 teams, which consists of: 6 out of the 8 teams that competed in the 2011 National Tournament in Scottsdale, Arizona, according to Laxpower Computer Ratings, 9 of the top 12 teams will in attendance and within the 12 teams they will represent 10 different states.

Mindy Stone and David Pomeroy would like to congratulate the following teams in being a part of this inaugural event:

  1. Fordham University

Desert Duo: CSU Wins Back-to-Back USL WCLA National Championships

by Brian Logue | LaxMagazine.com

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – She wore pink, but it wasn’t for style. Colorado State’s Maddie Garcia had strips of pink tape running down her injured right shoulder, trying to hold it together. She left the game once, dragging her shoulder as she came off the field, but she played through it. And she played well.

“I tore my labral tendon and then fractured my humerus, so it’s a little bit painful,” said Garcia, who battled the injury all tournament. “But it’s good now.”

The feeling of a championship will do that. Garcia’s four goals helped lead Colorado State over UCLA 11-9 in the US Lacrosse Women’s Collegiate Lacrosse Associates (WCLA) Division I National Championship game. It was Colorado State’s second consecutive national championship, and third in the last four years.

“This team has more heart than any team I know,” said first-year Colorado State coach Anna Pranger.

The Rams had to win the game without senior All-American defender Ally Mast. Mast was issued two yellow cards in CSU’s semifinal win over UCSB on Friday night, so she had to sit out her team’s next game – which happened to be the national championship game in her senior year. The entire team wrote the No. 20 on their shoulders in support of Mast.

“We said last night that we were going to win the game for her,” said senior goalie Annette Greenberg. “That’s the main reason we wanted to win. She was an All-American, one of our best defenders, senior. We just wanted to win the game for her.”

CSU’s previous two championships came from defense, but UCLA seemed to find the answer in the first half. After falling behind 5-2 early, UCLA scored the final five goals of the first half to take a 7-5 halftime lead. Morgan Oberstein, who had seven goals in UCLA’s Friday night win over Santa Clara, stayed hot and did most of the damage, scoring four goals.

CSU went scoreless for the final 19 minutes of the first half, but stormed out of the gates to start the second half. Hayley Bernstein scored less than two minutes into the second half. Just 37 seconds later, Garcia tied the game. Cara Gulbronson and Garcia added goals over the next five minutes and CSU was back in front with a 9-7 lead and 22 minutes to play.

WCLA Kicks Off College Championship Season

May 4, 2011 -

by Brian Logue | LaxMagazine.com

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - The 2011 college lacrosse championship season gets started Wednesday with the opening round of the US Lacrosse Women's Collegiate Lacrosse Associates (WCLA) National Championships. Twenty-four teams (16 in Division I, eight in Division II) are headed to the Arizona heat -- and we mean heat -- to battle for a national title. Temperatures in the high 90s are expected throughout the four days of competition.

Colorado State won the Division I championship as a No. 11 seed last year, and this year's tournament figures to be just as wide open. Cal Poly ripped off seven straight titles from 2001 to 2007, but there have been no dominant teams the last three years. Colorado State ended Cal Poly's reign in 2008, beating the Mustangs in overtime at Denver's Invesco Field, home of the NFL's Broncos. In 2009, the first year of the tournament in Scottsdale, Virginia Tech's club team came from nowhere to win the title as a No. 6 seed.

Colorado enters this year's tournament as the No. 1 seed following a terrific 15-1 season, and is looking to cash in on its first national title after three straight semifinal trips, including a spot in the 2009 championship game. Five of the Buffaloes' wins came by two goals or fewer, including one-goal wins over No. 2 Florida Club and No. 3 UC Davis Club.

The Gators, who have played most the season without injured star Kate O'Linn -- a finalist for the Lacrosse Magazine Preseason Player of the Year -- lost to Colorado by one in the Santa Barbara Shootout. They came back to avenge that loss during the A-Town Throwdown in Georgia in March, handing Colorado its only loss of the season.

UC Davis went into the Western Women's Lacrosse League (WWLL) playoffs as the No. 1 seed, but fell to rival Santa Clara in the champoinship game. Santa Clara, under first-year head coach Jen Lee, enters the tourney as the No. 4 seed, and with considerably less pressure than last year when it was the No. 1 seed. The Broncos also feature an outstanding goalie in senior Renee Eligio.

Another strong title contender figures to be Lindenwood, which is playing in its final WCLA championship. The Lions are beginning a transitional process to the NCAA Division II level following this year's championships. Lindenwood, coming off of a semifinal appearance last year, played a murderous schedule to get ready for the championship.

University of Colorado to Join the RMWLL in 2012

May 2, 2011 -

BOULDER, CO – The University of Colorado women’s lacrosse team will be joining the Rocky Mountain Women’s Lacrosse League next season.

So far through 2011, the Buffaloes have had a great season, going 15-1 and earning the number one seed in the Women’s Collegiate Lacrosse Associates National Championships.

CU will look to have similar success against strong competition in the RMWLL next year. The Buffs will have to play in-state rival and perennial powerhouse Colorado State, as well as tough out of state competition such as Brigham Young. The University of Colorado will also be facing nationally ranked division II schools in Westminster, the University of Denver and the University of Utah.

The RMWLL is happy to celebrate its ten year anniversary by adding CU to the conference. “Adding the University of Colorado to the RMWLL brings professionalism to our conference,” said Rocky Mountain Women’s Lacrosse League president David Pomeroy. “The addition of Colorado will bring more skill and talent to what is already an elite conference.”

For the past three years, CU has been playing as an independent in the WCLA.

CU will begin nationals on Wednesday against Midland University in Scottsdale, Ariz. The team is hoping to join the RMWLL as defending national champions come next season.
