The Shoe Fits: Colorado State Wins WDIA Title

by Brian Logue | Lacrosse Magazine Online Staff

May 8, 2010

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Colorado State rode a suffocating defense to its second national championship, as the Rams defeated Cal Poly 6-4 in the 2010 US Lacrosse Women's Division Intercollegiate Associates Division I National Championship.

The event, presented by Harrow Sports, was held at the Scottsdale Sports Complex and featured 24 of the top women's college club teams from around the country.

UC Berkeley Club defeated Loyola (Md.) Club 14-9 to win the inaugural Division II championship.

CSU goalie Annette Greenberg made 10 saves playing behind CSU's pressure zone defense and the Rams held Cal Poly to just one goal in the final 38 minutes of the game. Greenberg was named the tournament's outstanding goalie.

Cal Poly led 3-1 early after Ashley Royer scored back-to-back goals, but the Rams scored the final three goals of the first half, taking a 4-3 lead on Maddie Garcia's tally with just 30 seconds left in the half.

Jacki Cella's second goal of the game gave CSU a 5-3 lead just three and a half minutes into the second half, but Cal Poly answered quickly on Stacy Patch's second goal to cut the lead to 5-4 with 25:09 to play.

Both defenses took over from there, allowing few good shots. Katie Nepil finally scored with 10:21 to give CSU a 6-4 lead and Greenberg shut out the Mustangs the rest of the way.

from press release

BALTIMORE – Santa Clara and UC Berkeley Club have earned the top seeds for the 2010 US Lacrosse Women's Division Intercollegiate Associates (WDIA) National Championships, which will be presented by Harrow Sports. Santa Clara is the top seed in the Division I bracket while UC Berkeley Club is the top seed in the inaugural Division II championship. The tournament will be held May 5-8 at the Scottsdale (Ariz.) Sports Complex.

Santa Clara defeated UC Santa Barbara 12-6 in the Western Women's Lacrosse League (WWLL) championship game on Sunday to complete an 18-1 regular season. The Broncos, who played in the WDIA championship game in 2004, are looking for their first national title and headline the 16-team Division I field.

Lindenwood, the champion of the Women's Collegiate Lacrosse League, is the No. 2 seed and is followed by three other WWLL teams in the top five in the seeding: No. 3 UCSB, No. 4 UC Davis Club and No. 5 Cal Poly.

In the inaugural Division II bracket, UC Berkeley Club earned the top seed. The Bears beat Cal Poly B 9-7 in the WWLL Division II championship game on Sunday. Cal went 15-1 this season, losing only to Santa Clara before ending the regular season with 13-game winning streak. Joining the Bears in the championship are Oakland (Mich.) WDIA Champs Ready to Throw Down in A-Town

March 25, 2010

by David Ely | Special to Lacrosse Magazine Online | WDIA Top 25 Poll

To say senior Bri Beach has a full plate these days would be a gross understatement.

The president of the Virginia Tech Club team -- as well as the four other club officer -- plays both the role of team leader on the field and team administrator off it.

Not only does she play, but she also helps run practices. She fundraises, plans schedules and works out the Hokies' travel logistics.

Beach estimates that she spends about 18 hours per week (about nine of them playing, the rest earmarked on the administrative side) on lacrosse, and that’s on top of a regular semester’s worth of classes.

Michigan Reloads in Time for Rival MSU

March 18, 2010

by David Ely | Special to Lacrosse Magazine Online

At the beginning of the season, before the Michigan women's lacrosse team had even played a game, head coach Jen Dunbar knew this year would be more challenging than last.

The Wolverines graduated eight starters from last year’s squad that placed fifth at Nationals, and a lot of inexperienced players were now asked to take on larger roles. There’s always a learning curve for any young team, but the Wolverines’ play at the start of the season showed how much growing Michigan had to do to get back to the level it was at last year.

Michigan lost all four of its games during the Santa Barbara Shootout (Feb. 12-14) to start its 2010 campaign 0-4.

The Wolverines’ four losses in three days were one less than the total number of losses Michigan had in all of 2009, when it finished 20-5.

“We’re very inexperienced this year,” Dunbar said. “We made a lot of silly mistakes (during the Santa Barbara Shootout) that shouldn’t be happening.”

Dunbar said her team struggled during the Shootout to run her motion offense.

Lindenwood's Cribbin Calls on Tougher Foes

March 11, 2010

by David Ely | Special to Lacrosse Magazine Online

The Lindenwood women’s lacrosse team’s schedule is about to get much harder.

After a month of feasting on likes of Wisconsin, Marquette and Illinois, the Lions host No. 7 Colorado on Friday night to kick off a stretch of intense competition.

And coach Jack Cribbin wouldn’t have it any other way.

“One of our goals this year when we set up our schedule,” Cribbin said, “was we wanted to play the toughest schedule we could possibly play. We want to get the best and we know that starting with No. 7 Colorado until the end of the season, every single game will be a test.”

Tests will be plentiful for the No. 3-ranked Lions. After Lindenwood plays the Buffaloes, they play No. 10 Colorado State, No. 11 Georgia and No. 8 Florida Club during the A-Town Throwdown in Athens, Ga., March 26-28.

Then during the Lindenwood Invitational (April 8-11), the Lions face No. 9 BYU, No. 15 Michigan and No. 1 Santa Clara.

That’s a murderer's row as far as WDIA schedules go, and a significant step up from the teams Lindenwood played for much of the past month. But Cribbin feels that his team won’t suffer from sticker shock.

No. 1 Santa Clara Edges No. 2 UCSB

March 6, 2010

from UCSB press release

SANTA BARBARA, Calif -- Top-ranked Santa Clara defeated No. 2-ranked UC Santa Barbara in a tight US Lacrosse Women's Division Intercollegiate Associates (WDIA) contest Saturday.

Both goalies had 16 saves apiece, but the Broncos outshot the Gauchos, 32-29, to get the win. Santa Clara fueled its efforts by winning the draw control battle 17-8.

The Broncos scored the first goal of the game when senior Krista Shaw (Denver, Colo.) assisted freshman Maggie Burke (Lake Forest, Ill.) at 4:22 into the match. UCSB answered that when senior Sam Lutz (San Diego, Calif.) fed sophomore Maegan Cruse (San Diego, Calif.) at 5:55 to tie it 1-1. The Gauchos went up 3-1 on unassisted goals by Cruse and freshman Katie Mitchell (Lafayette, Calif.) but Bronco freshman Juliana Onieal (New York, N.Y.) found junior Gracie Binder  (Seattle, Wash.) open in front of the UCSB goal and it was 3-2. That's pretty much how it went all game with one team scoring one or two and the other team scoring one or two. The Gauchos did lead by 2 goals twice more in the first half but could not put any distance between themselves and Santa Clara.

The exception for the two teams pretty much trading scoring in 1's or 2's came in the last minute of the first half and the first two minutes of the second half. UCSB scored on a Mitchell assist to junior Ashley Antoon-Algieri (San Ramon, Calif.) with 1:19 left in the first half to put UCSB up 6-4. Santa Clara then won the next draw control before successfully running their offense to score with 15 seconds left. A Binder-to-Burke connection pulled the Broncos to within one at 6-5 before intermission.

Broncos, Guachos Vie for Bragging Rights

March 5, 2010

by David Ely | Special to Lacrosse Magazine Online | WDIA Poll

There are two different ways for a team to approach a No. 1 vs. No. 2 ranked showdown.

You can acknowledge the significance of the game and play into the hype, or you can say that you try to ignore the polls and that it’s just another tough game in a series of top-tier games on the schedule.

As No. 1 Santa Clara and No. 2 UC Santa Barbara ready for their top-ranked clash Saturday in Santa Barbara, Calif., the two respective coaches are on opposite ends of the spectrum in their approaches to the game.

UC Santa Barbara coach Paul Ramsey said his team has been hyping the game all week on campus in hopes of drawing a large crowd.

“Girls have been telling everybody on campus,” Ramsey said.

Santa Clara coach Brendan O’Brien has taken the more reserved approach.

“You try to take the polls away from it,” he said. “I think both Santa Barbara and Santa Clara could be No. 1 at this point and should be tied.”

But that doesn’t mean the Broncos aren’t looking forward to their trip down to face the Gauchos.

“Are they excited? Absolutely,” O’Brien said.

Once the game begins and the pre-game hype takes a backseat to the action on the field, the winner could be determined by which squad succeeds at neutralizing the other’s top offensive weapons

Gainesville's Big Enough for Two Lax Powers

February 26, 2010

by David Ely | Special to Lacrosse Magazine Online

The much-publicized addition of the Florida varsity women’s lacrosse program had the potential to throw a gigantic wrench in the makeup of the Gators’ WDIA club team. In other situations, a varsity startup might poach the club team’s best players and leave the cupboard bare for next year.

But so far, the Gators' club team is doing just fine in WDIA play, despite the presence of their varsity sister. Apparently, Gainesville is big enough for the two of them.

“To be honest, it hasn’t affected us all that much,” Florida club co-coach Betsy Milligan said Thursday.

The Gators lost Marissa Higgins, their starting goalie from the 2009 season, who walked onto the varsity squad, but that's about all the change the club has endured.

Milligan said that the addition of the varsity team has been a handy tool for her club.

“We have some former players of ours that are on that team,” she said. “They can give us updates on drills that we can do.”

Santa Clara's Shaw Finds New Ways to Contribute

February 18, 2010

by David Ely | Special to Lacrosse Magazine Online

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- Things are a little bit tougher for Santa Clara's Krista Shaw this season.

Opposing defenses are coming up with more and more ways to get the ball out of her stick. On other occasions, they simply try to take her out of the Broncos' offensive sets.

But that's to be expected when you enter the season as Lacrosse Magazine's WDIA Preseason Player of the Year. You're not going to be able to anonymously patrol the box anymore, and Shaw has done her best so far this season to adapt to the style teams deploy against her.

"She's hustling. She's playing her role," Santa Clara coach Brendan O'Brien said during last weekend's Santa Barbara Shootout.

"She's getting a lot of double teams, she's getting a lot of shutoffs. She's still about to get two or three goals a game. She's not the goal scorer right now because she's getting shutoff so much, but it's opening things up for other people."

That was the case during the Broncos' 12-6 win over No. 8 Colorado State -- Santa Clara's final match during the highly competitive Shootout.

Shaw scored the game's first goal, but didn't find the back of the cage for the rest of the game.

USL Adds D-II to WDIA National Championship Tournament

BALTIMORE (Oct. 8, 2009) – Starting in 2010, the US Lacrosse Women’s Division Intercollegiate Associates (WDIA) National Championships will include two tournaments for Divisions I and II. Previously, the US Lacrosse WDIA only supported a championship for Division I, which consisted of 16 teams that made their way to the tournament via an automatic qualifier or an at-large bid. The 2010 WDIA Division II tournament will consist of 8 teams from the Division II section of WDIA schools, starting with an at-large selection process in 2010.

The WDIA teams will be classified by the WDIA Council as either Division I or Division II for tournament purposes only. Division II schools are generally smaller schools, emerging lacrosse programs or from emerging leagues via an at-large selection process. Teams classified as Division II may request each year to move up to Division I. Division I teams will generally not be allowed to move down to Division II. In 2010, the WDIA will also release preseason and midseason polls for Division II teams. The WDIA Division I poll will continue to be posted weekly throughout the season.

"US Lacrosse has long supported the growth of the women’s collegiate game, both at the NCAA and club level," said Ann Carpenetti, women’s division director at US Lacrosse. "Through the WDIA, competitive collegiate women’s club lacrosse in the United States has remained a viable and rewarding playing opportunity for thousands of young college women who are either picking up a lacrosse stick for the first time or want to continue playing after high school for a shot at a national title. The growth at this level has been so significant that US Lacrosse believes it is time to offer an additional championship opportunity to smaller or emerging teams outside of the top 16. We are excited about providing a first class experience to even more WDIA teams in 2010, and look forward to seeing who will rise to the top in this inaugural year of the WDIA Division II Championship."

The 2010 US Lacrosse WDIA National Championship will take place May 5-8 in Scottsdale, Ariz. Brine is the official presenting sponsor for the 2010 US Lacrosse WDIA National Championship.

The US Lacrosse WDIA structure consists of more than 186 college club teams from around the country. Further information about the WDIA is available online at www.uslacrosse.org/wdia.

Virginia Tech's Team-Minded Approach Pays off in Title

May 10, 2009

by Clare Lochary | Lacrosse Magazine Online Staff

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Good times never seemed so good for the Virginia Tech club women's lacrosse team.

The No. 6 seed Hokies beat No. 4 seed Colorado, 17-9, in the 2009 WDIA National Championship on Saturday. A 7-0 run to start the game gave the Hokies an early bounce, and lockdown defense preserved the lead as the student-coached team claimed its first national title. After claiming their trophy, the Tech players sang and danced to the strains of "Sweet Caroline," the favorite song of teammate Erika Bury, a senior defender who missed the season due to leukemia treatments and served as an inspiration during their championship run.

"Colorado is known for coming out and getting up 3-0 really fast, and we wanted to avoid that. Whatever the score was, we just kept saying, 'It's 0-0,'" said student-coach Alex Kazlausky.

Briana Warner led the Hokies with three goals and two assists; goalie Megan Waters had eight saves.

Junior attacker Briana Beach (3g, 1a) opened the scoring, putting a nifty left-handed sidearm shot past Colorado keeper Katherine Mulligan (three saves). Beach's goal kicked off the seven unanswered goals that the struggling Buffs were unable to overcome. Virginia Tech also dominated draw controls and milked long possessions that culminated in quality shots.

"We came out flat. I think we left it all on the field last night (in the semifinals) and didn't have anything left," said Colorado head coach Kaitlin Moore.

Amber Lister (2g) finally got the Buffs on the scoreboard at 13:24 on a penalty shot. Tech freshman defender Megan McDonough largely neutralized Amy Long (2g), who is typically the heart of the Colorado attack. Rebecca Greene led the Buffs with three goals, but two of them came during the last 27 seconds of the game, when the Hokies had a comfortable lead and were watching the clock more than the field.

"We wanted to be composed, but with intensity," said student-coach Mindy Sartori. Sartori, a senior midfielder, was disqualified from the match when she picked up a second yellow card halfway through the second period, but kept her cool on the sidelines as she guided her squad to victory. Her calm demeanor was typical of Tech's team-minded approach to the game.

In addition to winning the title, the Hokies avenged a 9-7 loss to Colorado in February. That game was played in an unlikely snowstorm in Atlanta after just three practices; this one went down in the desert heat after a season full of surprises good and bad.

"Last year in Denver, we saw Colorado State win and we said, ‘That could be us next year.' But I don't think we really believed it," said Sartori.
