• US Lacrosse aims to offer a full range of online courses and instructional clinics in three curriculum levels by the end of 2009.
• US Lacrosse aspires to train 10,000 lacrosse coaches through online courses and instructional clinics by 2010.

Delivery Methods

Take Level 1 Online Course followed by Level 1 Instructional Clinic participation. Level 2 Online Courses (launched in 2007), and Level 2 Instructional Clinics Level 3 Online Courses, Topic-Specific clinics (target-2009). Practicum/Internship Professional development opportunities.

 

 

Coach Experience

Coaches who have limited or no experience coaching lacrosse
or
Experienced coaches who have an interest in strengthening their coaching foundation and knowledge base.
Coaches who have Level 1 instruction and/or some experience coaching lacrosse. Successfully completed all elements of Level 2 of the Coaches Education Program and/or has multiple years of experience coaching lacrosse at a competitive level. Coaches who have successfully completed all elements of Level 3 of the Coaches Education Program/experienced coaches or collegiate players with coaching experience that have a desire to make coaching a profession.

 

Athlete Skill Level

Beginning players, regardless of age.

Players who have some lacrosse experience.

Players with multiple years of lacrosse experience/ability to perform in a highly competitive environment. Players with multiple years lacrosse experience/ability to perform in a highly competitive environment.

 

Competition Level

Youth leagues, rec programs* developing high school teams. Competitive intersquad environment or school-based program similar to that of the junior and senior high. Varsity high school and elite club programs. Collegiate, high-level varsity high school, and elite club programs.

 

 

 

Content Emphasis for Coach

Responsibilities and philosophies of coaching and how to provide a safe and enjoyable athlete-centered environment that emphasizes positive growth and sportsmanship principles grounded in the fundamentals. Age appropriate coaching, safety, sportsmanship. Basic principles of sequential, seasonal program management, conditioning, nutrition, hydration and psychology. Coaches receive instruction on more advanced levels of conditioning, nutrition, sports psychology principles and are provided with resources for continuing personal development. Advanced, hands-on level of study designed for the coach interested in a career or who wants to significantly raise the level of his/her own coaching knowledge and ability.

 

Sport-Specific Emphasis

Rules, basic individual skills, and general team concepts. More advanced individual offensive/defensive skills and team concepts. Methods for improving advanced individual skills in intense game-like situations. Additional advanced team concepts; methods for player evaluation. Practical application of knowledge and exercise in year-round season planning.

 

 

 

 

 

Objectives

 The coach will be able to:
• Build a positive coaching philosophy
• Communicate effectively with players
• Understand basic player safety and risk management responsibilities
• Utilize strategies for teaching skills and tactics and youth and/or beginning players
• Plan for an effective/age-appropriate practice and season

The coach will be able to:
• Apply a positive coaching philosophy in an age-appropriate manner
• Use higher level communication skills to enhance player performance
• Organize a practice for maximum player and team improvement
• Develop standards of sportsmanship and respect
• Understand basic principles of conditioning, nutrition and mental preparation
• Teach advanced skills and tactics in an age-appropriate manner to experienced players
