This year, 40 boys and 25 girls high school lacrosse teams, representing close to 2700 athletes will be playing in Delaware. In addition, over 1600 boys and girls youth lacrosse players, ages 6 to 14 will be playing in one of the eighty youth club teams. Every year new high school varsity teams start a lacrosse program. Lacrosse is the fastest growing sport in America. New teams and new lacrosse players are what the Delaware Lacrosse Foundation is all about.
The Delaware Lacrosse Foundation (DLF), a Chapter of US Lacrosse and a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, is dedicated to fostering the growth of lacrosse in Delaware. The DLF provides financial support through grants and fund raising opportunities to help start and maintain youth lacrosse clubs and high school and middle school lacrosse teams throughout the state. It helps to fund college scholarships for deserving athletes that have decided to continue playing at the collegiate level. It runs programs and clinics for players, coaches and referees to improve their skill levels. The DLF's website, www.dellax.org , provides Delaware high school lacrosse scores, events and news throughout the year and the LaxLine for the youth teams to post practice and game announcements.
The DLF runs a number of major events each year. April 24th (Boys) and April 25th (Girls) will be the 16th annual Delaware Youth Lacrosse Days, raising funds to support our youth lacrosse programs during the year. April 24th is the men's University of Delaware lacrosse game against Drexel University at 7:00 PM, scheduled to be played on the new FieldTurf surface in Delaware Stadium. On April 25th, the Delaware women will also play Drexel University at 1:00 PM at Rullo Stadium. On June 10th at UD’s Clayton Hall, the yearly All Lacrosse Awards Banquet will be held to honor athletes at all levels of play and to induct new members into the Delaware Lacrosse Hall of Fame. Then, on June 12th, the DLF will sponsor the Delaware Boys and Girls High School Senior All Star Games at the University of Delaware in Newark, DE. This is the only sport where girls and boys All Star games are played consecutively at the same location. The recipients of the Jay Spilecki Scholarships are also announced between the games.
The DLF has accomplished many goals to grow lacrosse in Delaware, but there is still much to do. There are still students wanting to play in schools that have not been able to organize teams. The DLF has still not secured land for a lacrosse complex that would address the lack of playing fields for our youth clubs.
Delaware lacrosse needs your help if it is to continue to grow. We are asking Delaware lacrosse fans across the state for their financial support to help the Delaware Lacrosse Foundation continue growing the sport that has given us all so much. Please take a moment to go to the ActiveGiving site above and give a little something back to the sport of lacrosse. By doing so, you will be helping to insure that more boys and girls in future years will welcome Spring with a lacrosse stick in their hands and the love of the game in their hearts.
