Vermont Chapter Hosts Box Lacrosse Exhibitions The Vermont Chapter hosted the Kahnawake Mohawks, 2008 champions of Canada's Quebec Lacrosse League, for the first-ever box lacrosse games at the Essex Arena on August 29 and 30. The action was fast-paced and hard hitting as the Vermont team quickly adjusted to Canada's physical style of play. Kahnawake captured the opener of the two-game series by a 9-6 score, while the teams battled to a 7-7 tie in the second game. The city of Burlington has been invited to host a franchise in the Quebec Senior League in 2009, and the Vermont Chapter used the two-game series to evaluate whether or not a new franchise would be viable both financially and competitively. Longtime PLA Supporter John Burch Passes Away The Philadelphia Lacrosse Association is sad to note the sudden passing of John "Eagle" Burch, a longstanding member of the Philadelphia lacrosse community and a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. In his playing days, Mr. Burch was an all-American lacrosse player at the University of Virginia and played in the North-South Game in 1950. He supported the game throughout his life and served as a referee until he was 75 years old. In 2006, Mr. Burch was inducted into the Delaware County Sports Hall of Fame for his abilities in lacrosse and boxing. Mr. Burch, a Baltimore native, became an early pioneer for Pennsylvania lacrosse. The Eagle's Eye Lacrosse Club, a dominant USCLA men's club team in the 1980s and 1990s, was named after Mr. Burch, as is one of the playing fields at The Haverford School. The Eagle will be deeply missed.
Two Presidents Better Than One in South Jersey Four years ago, Bob Sheridan, a former chapter president, moved from North Jersey to South Jersey and thought he had left lacrosse behind. But John Kalinowski, president of the South Jersey Chapter of US Lacrosse, had other ideas. Kalinowski called Sheridan and asked for help in promoting the game in the area. And now, Sheridan is serving as president-emeritus of the South Jersey chapter. "I was ready to turn in my lacrosse stick for a fishing pole, but now I am back with it and I could not be happier," Sheridan recently told The Coast Star newspaper. "I am re-energized and everyone is excited about our programs." Working in conjunction with Shamrock Lacrosse, the South Jersey chapter has been providing nets and balls for area schools or towns starting new programs, and coordinating clinics for new coaches. About 8,000 of US Lacrosse's 20,000 New Jersey members hail from South Jersey.
South Central Texas Chapter's Garrigan Receives Award Coach Andy Garrigan from Austin High was recently selected as the 2007 Coach of the Year for the state of Texas by the THSLL. Andy has taken his team to the Texas State Championship in each of the past two years and was undefeated in Central District play this season. Early in his coaching career Andy was instrumental in establishing the lacrosse programs at Highland Park and St. Mark's in Dallas. Andy is the US Lacrosse representative for Central Texas and serves as president of US Lacrosse's South Central Texas Chapter. Congratulations to Coach Garrigan for this recognition by his peers and for his continuing contributions to the growth of lacrosse in Texas.
Chicago Chapter Clinic Features Machine Players
The Chicago Chapter held a "Get Acquainted with Lacrosse" indoor clinic recently for youth players and received an assist from Chicago Machine players Mike Culver and Zach Gagel. The two professionals provided the kids with an expert's introduction to the game. The Chapter also provided sticks - acquired through a US Lacrosse Equipment Grant Program - to each of the participants. The kids were able to take the sticks home following the clinic in order to begin their wall-ball workouts. -submitted by Steve Larek

Philadelphia Golf Outing Supports the Game
The Philadelphia Lacrosse Association's recent golf outing at the Manufacturers' Country Club raised $13,000 to support PLA's mission to promote lacrosse in the region. The event included 92 participants and 43 individual and corporate sponsors. The annual PLA golf outing has raised almost $178,000 since its inception in 1993. Through the years, proceeds from the event have enabled the PLA to help launch and expand youth and high school lacrosse programs, provide camp scholarships, conduct clinics, sponsor area tournaments, and maintain the Pennsylvania Lacrosse Hall of Fame, among other things. This year's funds will be earmarked, in part, to support the Philadelphia School District's Middle School Program. Pictured on the 18th hole, from left to right, are Rob Lord, Dave Brumbaugh, Peter Jacobs, Brian Harrington, Dennis Goldstein, Eric Pokorny, John Strang, and John Zaharchuk.
North Texas Chapter Receives Gift Tom Fitzsimmons, chapter president, recently accepted a generous donation of $10,000 from Charlie Murphy's Estate to help assist in the growth of the game in North Texas. Murphy, a charter member of the Hudson Valley Chapter's Hall of Fame and a 1998 inductee to the National Hall of Fame, was a legendary figure in the game's development at Yorktown (N.Y.) High School and in the Hudson Valley region. He passed away in 2005 at the age of 93. The donation was made to honor Murphy's long-time contributions to and love for the game. The chapter is deciding on how to best use the gift so that it will have a long-lasting and meaningful effect on the sport in the area.
