Vermont's 8th Annual Recognition Dinner
Vermont's 2009 Recognition DinnerThe Vermont Chapter recently hosted its 8th Annual Recognition Dinner, which serves each year to honor long-time contributors to the game. The keynote speaker at this year's event was Neal Anderson, men's lacrosse head coach at Norwich University. Fast Break - Chicago Style
Chicago Fast BreakWith the support of the Illinois Chapter, US Lacrosse was able to hold a Level 1 Instructional Clinic and Official’s Training at Orr High School. There were 66 attendees for the Level 1 Clinic and 16 attendees for the Women’s Officials Training. LaxWorld served as sponsor for the event, providing giveaways such as dry erase boards, stickers, lanyards and visors for the participants. Thanks to all that helped to put on this successful Fast Break event!

Houston Chapter Represented at the Texas Lacrosse Expo
Texas Lacrosse ExpoStacie McKay, president of the Houston Chapter of US Lacrosse, attended the Texas Lacrosse Expo, presented by Lacrosse 4 All.  Nearly 250 participants attended educational programs, vendor exhibits, and photography exhibitions.  Stacie successfully set up a US Lacrosse booth to represent the chapter, and provided many informational brochures, membership opportunities and free giveaways.  Thank you Stacie for representing US Lacrosse at this event!

 

Co-President of the Tennessee Chapter Awarded Bronze Service Star
Geoff StarronGeoff Starron, co-president of the Tennessee Chapter of US Lacrosse, was awarded a second bronze service star to his Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal on Monday, October 26th. The MOVSM was established by Executive Order 12830, dated 9 January 1993. The MOVSM may be awarded to members of the Armed Forces of the United States and their Reserve Components who perform outstanding volunteer community service of a sustained, direct and consequential nature. After a soldier has been awarded a MOSVM, additional periods of eligibility for the MOVSM are designated by bronze service stars. Geoff was first awarded the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal in November 2006. He was awarded a bronze service star in May of 2008, and now a second bronze service star in October of 2009, indicating that he has qualified for the MOVSM three times. The most recent bronze service star was awarded for serving as co-president of the TN Chapter of US Lacrosse. Geoff brought the chapter into compliance with USL guidelines and then transitioned the chapter to new stable leadership, during off duty hours while physically attending the 20 week long Military Intelligence Captains Career Course at Ft. Huachuca, Arizona.

US Lacrosse Indiana Chapter Promotes Lacrosse at Indianapolis' Circle City Classic
On October 3, 2009, the Indiana Chapter took part in introducing lacrosse to thousands of fans that attended the 26th Annual Circle City Classic at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, an annual event that pairs two “Historically Black Colleges” football programs to promote HBCU institutions and raise money towards scholarships. The Indiana Chapter was invited to promote the sport and meet the Classic’s mission in this “Sports X-perience” event to promote youth involvement and living a healthy lifestyle. Indiana coaches and players from both girls and boys youth and high school programs volunteered their time and energy and welcomed fans to pick-up a lacrosse stick, shoot on goal and learn about the “Creators Game."

Vermont Catamount ClassicUS Lacrosse at Catamount Classic
David Hallam, Vermont Chapter President, attended the 2nd annual Catamount Classic – Lacrosse For A Cure, on October 11, 2009. Ten top-level college lacrosse teams competed in an all-day tournament. All of the proceeds of this event were donated to testicular cancer research at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

The Greater Houston Chapter Trains 37 PE Teachers
Stacie McKay and the Greater Houston Chapter recently held a second physical education class which benefitted 37 area P.E. teachers. These teachers were instructed on how to properly teach lacrosse in their classes. The chapter coordinated their first P.E. teachers lacrosse clinic earlier this year in March (see below). Additionally, the Greater Houston Chapter has set up an equipment loaner program for the teachers to utilize. Several area schools are trying to create an after-school lacrosse program and a few inner-city high schools are also working to set up new teams.

Utah Chapter Welcomes Cornell's Tambroni
Jeff Tambroni and ULA staffThe Utah Lacrosse Association welcomed Cornell University's Head Coach Jeff Tambroni to Salt Lake City for a free coaches clinic in July. The event kicked off with a breakfast to honor the state's high school boys' and girls' coaches of the year, and followed with a free clinic and Q&A session for high school and youth coaches in attendance. "We were very excited to have Jeff here in Salt Lake, hot off the heels of one of the best seasons of his career," said Lisa Schmidt, executive director of the Utah Lacrosse Association. "His energy and experience is second to none and we are thrilled that he could take some time out of his busy schedule to share his knowledge with our coaches."


Richmond Chapter Presents Sportsmanship Awards
Richmond Chapter Sportsmasnhip AwardsThe Richmond Chapter, in conjunction with the local officials' association, presented awards to the area teams that demonstrated the best sportsmanship during the spring 2009 season. The boys' and girls' teams from the Collegiate School won the private school honors, while the Midlothian boys and Freeman Rebels girls won the public/club team awards. The inscription on the plaque reads: The Central Virginia Lacrosse Officials' Association and the Richmond Chapter of US Lacrosse recognize (coach and program) for the exceptional level of sportsmanship demonstrated by their players and coaches throughout the 2009 season. It is with such high standards that we all hope to promote the future of lacrosse. Houston Chapter Hosts P.E. Teachers Lacrosse Clinic
The Houston Chapter of US Lacrosse hosted its first annual clinic for physical education teachers in March. The clinic was open to all Houston area teachers interested in adding lacrosse to their curriculum for physical education classes. The clinic covered the history of lacrosse, the growth of the game, the purpose of the Houston Chapter as well as the basic rules, equipment and terminology of the women's and men's game. The teachers were then led to the field for hands-on learning of basic skills. Each teacher in attendance was given a copy of the US Lacrosse Physical Education Curriculum and a lacrosse stick so that they can continue to practice their skills. The teachers were eager to learn and are excited and ready to bring lacrosse to a wider base of youth.


New Inductees in the Potomac Chapter Hall of Fame
The Potomac Chapter inducted its newest members at its seventh annual Hall of Fame Dinner and Induction ceremony. The event was held on February 7, 2009 at the University Club of Washington D.C. The addition of the six newest members brings the total number of inductees in the Potomac Chapter Hall of Fame to 36. Pictured (left to right) are the new inductees that comprise the chapter's Class of 2009: Thomas M. McHugh, Jude B. Collins, Cathy Nelson Reese, Alix M. Fellows, Darah Bonham, and John Bennett Sothoron.


First Chapters Leadership Conference Held at 2009 US Lacrosse National Convention 
Chapters Leadership ConferenceAn number of chapter awards were presented during the Chapters Leadership Conference in January, including Chapter of the Year, Volunteer of the Year, Leader of the Year and the Chapter Advancement Award.
