Men's A Division

Championship • Saturday, May 14

No. 2 UC-Santa Barbara 8, No. 4 Sonoma State 7
The UC-Santa Barbara defense held strong in the final three minutes as Sonoma State desperately tried to get a shot on cage. The defense held pat and the Gauchos celebrated their second straight US Lacrosse Intercollegiate Associates National Championship with an 8-7 victory over their rival from the Western Collegiate Lacrosse League (WCLL). The final score and outcome was the exact same several weeks ago in the WCLL tournament. Second-seeded UC-Santa Barbara turned the momentum in the second half as the Gauchos outscored the Seawolves 4-1 in the decisive third quarter. UCSB took its first lead at the 9:10 mark in the fourth quarter as the MDIA tournament MVP Nick Stratton scored his second goal of the game. Sonoma controlled the game early on as they led 6-3 at the half. Sonoma's Cito Williams was named the championship game offensive MVP with UCSB defenseman Dave Gorham was tabbed the championship defensive MVP. This was the first appearance for Sonoma in the championship game since 2002 when they won the title. UCSB was making its third straight championship game appearance.

Men's B Division

Championship • Saturday, May 14

No. 1 San Diego 9, No. 2 Utah Valley State 6
Top-seeded San Diego won the 2005 US Lacrosse Men's B Division Intercollegiate Associates National Championship in Blaine, Minn. This was the first Men's B Division national championship awarded. Sophomore attackman Marshall Shulz scored two goals and two assists for the Toreros and was named tournament MVP. Utah Valley State freshman Adam Hickman scored a team-high three goals. Hickman was named the championship game offensive MVP and San Diego defenseman Brian Williams was named the championship game defensive MVP. San Diego jumped out early on the UVS as the Toreros led 4-0 after the first quarter and 6-2 at the half.



Men's A Division


Semifinal • Friday, May 13

No. 2 UC-Santa Barbara 4, No. 3 Michigan 3
UC-Santa Barbara goalie Ryan Brittain celebrated his 22nd birthday with a 4-3 semifinal victory over No. 3 Michigan at the 2005 US Lacrosse Intercollegiate Associates National Championships in Blaine, Minn. Brittain recorded seven saves in the victory. The game featured the top two defensive teams in the Men's A Division. The Wolverines, who were making their first appearance in the semifinals, led 3-2 going into the fourth quarter before the Gauchos scored two unanswered goals to secure their third straight trip to the national championship game. The Gauchos defeated Colorado State last year to win their first-ever IA championship.

No. 4 Sonoma State 21, No. 9 Florida State 6
Ninth-seeded Florida State jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead before seeing it vanish into thin air as No. 4 Sonoma State rolled the Seminoles 21-6 in the Men's A Division semifinal of the 2005 US Lacrosse Intercollegiate Associates National Championships in Blaine, Minn. The Seawolves led 14-3 at halftime and outscored the 'Noles 7-3 in the second half. SSU was led by freshman Andres Williams' five goals and one assist. Florida State was the first SELC team in an IA semifinal since 1997. Sonoma will face No. 2 UC-Santa Barbara, the defending IA national champions, in Saturday's championship game.

Consolation Round
No. 6 Oregon 12, No. 1 BYU 11 (OT): For the second time in three days the top-seeded BYU Cougars lost at the 2005 US Lacrosse Intercollegiate Associates National Championships. No. 6 Oregon forced overtime and then won the consolation game with senior Taylor Schofield's goal.
No. 8 UC-San Diego 13, No. 5 Colorado:  UC-San Diego outscored No. 5 Colorado 7-2 in the second half as the Tritons doubled up the Buffaloes 13-7 in the consolation round. UCSD attackman Chris McCall scored nine goals and added an assist in the win.
No. 10 Oakland 13, No. 13 Utah 10: Oakland junior Joseph Opron (5 goals, 2 assists) had a hand in half of the Golden Grizzlies' 13 goals. No. 10 Oakland defeated No. 13 Utah 13-10 in this consolation game.
No. 11 Arizona 9, No. 12 Lindenwood 8: Arizona's Kole Dea scored a game-high four goals to lead the No. 11 Wildcats past No. 12 Lindenwood 9-8 in a consolation game.
No. 14 Northeastern 17, No. 7 Virginia Tech 7: Northeastern sophomore Chris Cook had a huge game as he scored two goals and tallied eight assists as the Huskies won 17-7 over No. 7 Virginia Tech.
No. 15 Minnesota 9, No. 16 Texas Tech 3: The 15th-seeded Minnesota Gophers sent their head coach Chris Larson off on a winning note with a 9-3 consolation game victory over No. 16 Texas Tech. Larson is retiring this year after being the head coach of the Gophers for 12 seasons.

Men's B Division

Semifinals • Friday, May 15

No. 1 San Diego 16, No. 4 Montana 3
Top-seeded San Diego ran away with a 16-3 Men's B Division semifinal victory over No. 4 Montana in the 2005 US Lacrosse Intercollegiate Associates National Championships in Blaine, Minn. The Toreros scored six goals in the first quarter and led 12-2 at the half. Sophomore Marshall Shulz scored six goals and added one assist while teammate Daniel Barber (3g, 2a) scored five-points. San Diego advances to the first-ever B Division National Championship where they will face No. 2 Utah Valley State.

No. 2 Utah Valley State 12, No. 6 Harding 8
Second-seeded Utah Valley State defeated No. 6 Harding 12-8 in the Men's B Division semifinal game at the 2005 US Lacrosse Intercollegiate Associates National Championships in Blaine, Minn. UVS was led by freshman attackman Adam Hickman's (4g, 1a) five-point game. The Simmons brothers Brodie and James both scored two goals and added an assist in the victory. The Wolverines will face top-seeded San Diego in the first-ever Men's B Division national championship game on Saturday.

Consolation Round
No. 5 St. John's 13, No. 8 Southwestern 10: Fifth-seeded St. John's (Minn.) and No. 8 Southwestern played even for three quarters but the Johnnies netted six goals in the fourth quarter to cinch the 13-10 consolation round victory.
No. 7 Calvin 14, No. 3 Davidson 10: For the second straight day third-seeded Davidson suffered a loss. This time No. 7 Calvin defeated the Wildcats 14-10.



Men's B Division


Quarterfinals • Thursday, May 12

Note: The weather in Blaine, Minn. today was rainy, cold, windy and raw. Temperatures were in the mid-30's with wind gusts up to 25-30 mph equaling a wind chill of 25-27 degrees in a driving cold rain. Local Minneapolis-St. Paul forecasters said it was the coldest May 12 on record for this area.

No. 1 San Diego 22, No. 8 Southwestern 2
Top-seeded San Diego demolished No. 8 Southwestern 22-2 in the Men's B Division quarterfinal round at the 2005 US Lacrosse Intercollegiate Associates National Championships in Blaine, Minn. The Toreros led 10-1 at the half and outscored the Pirates 12-1 in the second half. San Diego sophomore Marshall Shulz led all-scorers with four goals and freshman Daniel Barber (3 goals, 3 assists) scored a game-high six points. Southwestern goalie Jacob Dickinson made 22 saves in the contest. The Toreros move on to the semifinals where they will face No. 4 Montana.

No. 2 Utah Valley State 8, No. 7 Calvin 7 (OT)
Second-seeded Utah Valley State barely survived its Men's B Division quarterfinal game with No. 7 Calvin at the 2005 US Lacrosse Intercollegiate Associates National Championships in Blaine, Minn. Freshman Adam Hickman scored the game-winner at the 2:55 mark in overtime to beat the Knights 8-7.  Calvin led 6-4 late in the fourth quarter but UVS scored three goals in the final 3:32 of the game to take a 7-6 lead. Calvin then tied the game with five seconds left on senior Adam Pietrocarlo's fourth goal of the game. The Wolverines received six points from the Simmons brothers, Brodie (3g, 1a) and James (1g, 1a). UVS moves on to play No. 6 Harding in Friday's semifinal game.

No. 6 Harding 11, No. 3 Davidson 3
Sixth-seeded Harding manhandled an undermanned No. 3 Davidson team as the Bison rolled over the Wildcats 11-3 in the Men's B Division quarterfinal round at the 2005 US Lacrosse Intercollegiate Associates National Championships in Blaine, Minn. Junior attackman John Tomassoni scored five goals and dished out two assists in the Bison victory. Bison junior Alan Frost added two goals and two assists. Davidson freshman Ryan Robertson led the Wildcats with two goals. Harding, located in Searcy, Arkansas, has a roster littered with players from Maryland, Pennsylvania and Texas but the interesting fact is there are no local Arkansas natives on the team. The Bison play No. 2 Utah Valley State tomorrow in the semifinals.

No. 4. Montana 13, No. 5 St. John's (Minn.) 8
Montana freshman attackman Townsend Hall scored a game-high six goals and added an assist to cap off a seven-point performance in the Grizzlies' 13-8 victory over No. 5 St. John's (Minn.) in the Men's B Division opening day of play at the 2005 US Lacrosse Intercollegiate Associates National Championships in Blaine, Minn. The Grizzlies also had three players score two goals apiece: Kevin Stout, Jake Goodwin and C.J. Bohnen. Montana outscored St. John's 8-4 in the second half, including five goals in the fourth quarter to end the Johnnies season. St. John's, the only local team in the Men's B Division, was led offensively by Ben Ivory's three goals. The Grizzlies will play top-seeded San Diego in Friday's semifinals.



Men's A Division

Quarterfinals • Wednesday, May 11

No. 9 Florida State 11, No. 1 BYU 10
A bracket buster game ended the second day of action at the 2005 US Lacrosse Intercollegiate Associates National Championships in Blaine, Minn. Ninth-seeded Florida State scored five goals in the third quarter to take a 9-7 lead over top-seeded BYU. The Cougars went down fighting scoring two goals in the final four minutes but it wasn't enough as the Seminoles won 11-10. Florida State sophomore attackman Rob Herzog scored the game-winner for the 'Noles with 2:17 left in the game. FSU junior D.J. Romanchuck scored a team-high three goals and senior attackman Mike Borkowski (1g, 3a) tallied four points. BYU had four players score four or more goals led by Mark Davis (3g, 1a). The Cougars held a slim 5-4 advantage at halftime. The Seminoles advance to Friday's semifinal round where they will face No. 4 Sonoma State.

No. 2 UC-Santa Barbara 12, No. 7 Virginia Tech 3
The defending IA national champions UC-Santa Barbara had little trouble with No. 7 Virginia Tech as the Gauchos won 12-3 in the quarterfinals. In the same fashion as Tuesday's first round victory the Gaucho defense only allowed three goals for the second straight game. UCSB junior Nick Stratton led all-scorers with five points on three goals and two assists. Gaucho senior Will Patton scored a goal and passed out a game-high three goals. No. 2 UCSB will face No. 3 Michigan in Friday's semifinal round.

No. 3 Michigan 7, No. 6 Oregon 4
The seventh time was the charm for Michigan as they finally won a quarterfinal game after being unsuccessful in six straight chances. The third-seeded Wolverines advance to Friday's semifinal round of the 2005 US Lacrosse Intercollegiate Associates National Championship in Blaine, Minn. with their 7-4 victory over No. 6 Oregon. Freshman midfielder Robert Morales scored two goals and dished out two assists for the Wolverines. Oregon sophomore Julian Coffman (2 goals, 1 assist) scored a team-high three points for the Ducks. Michigan will meet the defending IA national champions UC-Santa Barbara Gauchos in the semifinals.

No. 4 Sonoma State 8, No. 5 Colorado 7 (3OT)
Sonoma State freshman Andres Williams scored the biggest goal of his life as he deposited a feed from teammate Brian Johnson into Colorado's goal with 3:32 remaining in the third overtime period to give the fourth-seeded Seawolves a dramatic 8-7 quarterfinal victory over the fifth-seeded Buffaloes. Sonoma moves onto Friday's semifinal round of the 2005 US Lacrosse Intercollegiate Associates National Championship in Blaine, Minn. for the fourth straight year. Colorado led 5-4 going into the fourth quarter but saw Sonoma take a 7-6 lead late in the quarter. Colorado junior Brandon Bailey forced overtime as he scored the game-tying goal off an assist from Andrew Upah (1g, 2a) with 11 seconds remaining. The two teams had their chances in the two overtime periods before Sonoma ended the game and Colorado's season in the third overtime period. Sonoma will go up against No. 9 Florida State in the semifinals.

Consolation Round

No. 8 UC-San Diego 15, No. 16 Texas Tech 2: Eighth-seeded UC-San Diego scored 13 unanswered goals to break open a 2-2 game, after one quarter of play, as the Tritons cruised to a 15-2 consolation round win against No. 16 Texas Tech.
No. 10 Oakland 13, No. 15 Minnesota 8: No. 10 Oakland's attackmen Joseph Opron and William Binge scored four goals apiece to pace the Golden Grizzlies to a 13-8 consolation round victory over No. 15 Minnesota.
No. 13 Utah 11, No. 12 Lindenwood 7: Utah won this battle of teams making their first appearance at the IAs as the Utes defeated No. 12 Lindenwood 11-7 in the first consolation round. Utah was added at the last minute, this past weekend, because of second-seeded Colorado State's ineligibility violation.
No. 14 Northeastern 6, No. 11 Arizona 5: No. 11 Arizona ran out of time as they scored all of its goals in the second half but came up a goal short against No. 14 Northeastern losing 6-5 in the first consolation round.



First Round • Tuesday, May 10

No. 1 BYU 15, No. 16 Texas Tech 6
Top-seeded BYU had little trouble with 16-seeded Texas Tech as the Cougars won 15-6 in the first round of the 2005 US Lacrosse Intercollegiate Associates National Championships in Blaine, Minn. The Cougars had 10 different goal scorers in the victory, highlighted by Mark Tschaggeny's three goals. The Red Raiders were led by freshman attackman Michael Gregory (2 goals, 2 assists). BYU will face No. 9 Florida State in the quarterfinals tomorrow at 4:30 p.m.

No. 2 UC-Santa Barbara 11, No. 15 Minnesota 3
Second-seeded UC-Santa Barbara, the defending IA national champions, got off to a winning starts in the 2005 US Lacrosse Intercollegiate Associates National Championships in Blaine, Minn. as they defeated No. 15 Minnesota 11-3 in the first round. The Gauchos had four players score two or more goals. UCSB led Minnesota 7-2 at the half. The Gophers scored two goals in the second quarter and tacked on one more in the third, UCSB will now face No. 7 Virginia Tech in the quarterfinals tomorrow at 4:30 p.m.

No. 3 Michigan 13, No. 14 Northeastern 6
The third-seeded Michigan Wolverines raced out to a 8-0 halftime lead on No. 14 Northeastern before finishing with a 13-6 first round victory in the 2005 US Lacrosse Intercollegiate Associates National Championships in Blaine, Minn. Michigan's Peter Krauss and Anthony Ragnone II scored three goals apiece. The Wolverines out shot the Huskies 34-26 and won 12 of 22 face-offs. Northeastern, making it's first appearance at the IAs, got two goals from Jason Aloma and Chris Colello. Michigan will try to win it's first-ever IA quarterfinal game as they face No. 6 Oregon tomorrow at 1:30 p.m.

No. 4 Sonoma State 15, No. 13 Utah 3
Sonoma State built up a commanding 10-0 halftime lead over No. 13 Utah and cruised to a 15-3 first round victory in the 2005 US Lacrosse Intercollegiate Associates National Championships in Blaine, Minn. Fourth-seeded Sonoma State was led by junior attackman Dan McDonald who scored three goals and three assists for the Seawolves. Senior Jon Wiley added two goals and two assists in the win. Utah, who was added just this weekend to the IA tournament due to second-seeded Colorado State's ineligibility violation, scored two goals in the third quarter and one in the fourth. Sonoma moves on to face No. 5 Colorado tomorrow in the quarterfinals at 1:30 p.m.

No. 5 Colorado 11, No. 12 Lindenwood 9
Fifth-seeded Colorado held off No. 12 Lindenwood 11-9 in a first round game of the 2005 US Lacrosse Intercollegiate Associates National Championships in Blaine, Minn. Colorado junior Jason Anderson scored three goals and four assists to lead the Buffaloes. Colorado led 6-3 at halftime before the Lions roared back in the third quarter. Freshman attackman Jason Combs (3 goals, 4 assists) led the Lion attack with seven points as Lindenwood stuck five goals in the third quarter to tie the game at 8. The Buffaloes out scored Lindenwood 3-1 in the final quarter to earn the win. Colorado will face fourth-seeded Sonoma State in the quarterfinals tomorrow at 1:30 p.m.

No. 6 Oregon 10, No. 11 Arizona 6
The sixth-seeded Oregon Ducks won this battle against West Coast teams as the Ducks took down No. 11 Arizona 11-6 in the first round of the 2005 US Lacrosse Intercollegiate Associates National Championships in Blaine, Minn. Oregon outscored Arizona 5-2 in the decisive third quarter. The Ducks were led offensively by junior Chris Nelson's four goals and one assist. Seniors Danny Ernst and Taylor Schofield scored two goals apiece in the win. The Wildcats received two goals apiece from Scott Rickert and Brian Etheredge. Oregon will face No. 3 Michigan in tomorrow's quarterfinals at 1:30 p.m.

No. 7 Virginia Tech 11, No. 10 Oakland 9
Virginia Tech junior Adam Gehl scored four second half goals to lead the seventh-seeded Hokies to a 11-9 victory over 10th-seeded Oakland in the first round of the 2005 US Lacrosse Intercollegiate Associates National Championships in Blaine, Minn. Virginia Tech senior Richard Moser added three goals for the Southeastern Lacrosse Conference champions. The Hokies advance to the quarterfinals where they will play the defending IA national champions No. 2 UC-Santa Barbara tomorrow at 4:30 p.m.

No. 9 Florida State 13, No. 8 UC-San Diego 8
The lone upset from the first round of the 2005 US Lacrosse Intercollegiate Associates National Championships in Blaine, Minn. came from No. 9 Florida State who took down No. 8 UC-San Diego 13-8. The Seminoles outscored the Tritons 9-5 in the second half. FSU senior attackman Mike Borkowski led all scorers with two goals in four assists. UCSD, making it's first appearance at the IAs, got a four-point performance out of junior Nick Dean (2 goals, 2 assists). Florida State will have a tough challenge in the semifinals as it faces No. 1 BYU tomorrow at 4:30 p.m.
