Championship • Saturday, May 14
No. 4 Cal Poly 14, No. 2 Colorado State 3 Cal Poly will remain the only team engraved on the US Lacrosse Women's Division Intercollegiate Associates national championship trophy as the fourth-seeded Mustangs won a fifth straight title with a convincing 14-3 victory over second-seeded Colorado State on Saturday in Blaine, Minn. Cal Poly came out and blitzed Colorado State for five straight goals to begin the first half and never looked back. Sophomore Janelle Jones scored a game-high five goals and was awarded the tournament attack MVP. Cal Poly senior Kim Lutz scored three goals and one assist and took home championship game MVP honors. The Mustang defense held the Rams scoreless in the second half as Cal Poly scored five unanswered goals. Colorado State senior Dana Nilson was named tournament defense MVP.
Consolation Round No. 1 UC-Santa Barbara 7, No. 6 Florida 6: Top-seeded UC-Santa Barbara bounced back from its semifinal loss to No. 4 Cal Poly with a 7-6 win over No. 6 Florida in the consolation round. The Gauchos and Gators were tied 4-4 at the half. No. 3 Navy 20, No. 10 Santa Clara 16: The Midshipmen led 12-10 at the half over the Broncos and then outscored Santa Clara 8-6 in the second half to win the game 20-16. No. 7 Colorado 14, No. 8 Maryland 13 (OT): Colorado senior Jessica Sandman scored her fourth goal of the game at the 2:40 mark in overtime to secure the 14-13 victory over No. 8 Maryland in Saturday's consolation round. Maryland sophomore Amy Knell led the Terps in the loss with three goals and four assists. No. 9 Arizona State 14, No. 5 Michigan 8: Arizona State senior Jodi Gosselin scored five goals and three assists to lead the No. 9 Sun Devils to a 14-8 upset victory over No. 5 Michigan. ASU junior Sarah Ellis also scored five goals and added two assists. No. 12 Rhode Island 18, No. 16 Minnesota-Duluth 9: Rhode Island senior Melissa Tewksbury scored a game-high eight goals to lead the Rams to a 18-9 victory over No. 16 Minnesota-Duluth in Saturday's consolation round. No. 13 Texas A&M 11, No. 11 Delaware 10: The No. 13 Aggies won their second straight consolation game with an 11-10 victory over No. 11 Delaware. No. 14 Washington 17, No. 15 Lindenwood 16: The 14th-seeded Washington Huskies edged out 15th-seeded Lindenwood 17-16 in Saturday's consolation round. Washington senior midfielder Jenny Vancalcar scored five goals to pace the Huskies.
Semifinals • Friday, May 13
No. 4 Cal Poly 8, No. 1 UC-Santa Barbara 2 The four-time defending IA national champions Cal Poly will go for a fifth IA title on Saturday as the Mustangs pulled the 8-2 upset of top-seeded UC-Santa Barbara. It was a very physical game as 12 penalty cards were given out. Cal Poly led 6-0 at the half before shutting the door on the Gauchos in the second half. Mustang freshman Kaitlin Chandler scored two goals to lead the Poly offense. UCSB goalie Donna Chardon made seven saves in the loss. Cal Poly will face No. 2 Colorado State in Saturday's championship game.
No. 2 Colorado State 10, No. 6 Florida 3 It was a tale of two-halves as sixth-seeded Florida led 3-1 at halftime but that was before second-seeded Colorado State erupted for nine goals in the second half en route to a 10-3 semifinal victory in the 2005 US Lacrosse Intercollegiate Associates National Championships in Blaine, Minn. The Rams defense was stellar in the second half as they held the Gators scoreless. WDIA MVP of the Year Jen Gunlikson scored all five of her goals in the 9-0 second half run. Florida, who hours before defeated No. 3 Navy 13-11 in overtime, ran out of gas. The Rams will make their first appearance in the IA national championship game on Saturday.
Quarterfinals • Friday, May 13
No. 1 UC-Santa Barbara 14, No. 9 Arizona State 5 UC-Santa Barbara will be making its first appearance in the semifinals thanks to a strong 14-5 victory over No. 9 Arizona State in the quarterfinals of the 2005 US Lacrosse Intercollegiate Associates National Championships in Blaine, Minn. Junior Emily Preiss and sophomore Brooke Julicher scored three goals apiece to lead the Gaucho attack. Top-seeded UCSB will now face the four-time defending WDIA national champions Cal Poly. The semifinal will be held at 5:30 p.m. this afternoon.
No. 2 Colorado State 17, No. 10 Santa Clara 5 The clock struck midnight for No. 10 Santa Clara in the quarterfinals at the 2005 US Lacrosse Intercollegiate Associates National Championships in Blaine, Minn. The Broncos lost 17-5 to the hands of second-seeded Colorado State. Last year, the Broncos were seeded eighth and made it all the way to the national title game before losing to Cal Poly. Colorado State was led offensively by senior Juli Ramirez's four goals and one assist as the Rams led 9-2 at the half and outscored the Broncos 8-3 in the second half. The Rams will be making their first appearance in the semifinals this afternoon as they face No. 6 Florida at 2:30 p.m.
No. 4 Cal Poly 14, No. 5 Michigan 4 There was no denying the four-time US Lacrosse Women's Division Intercollegiate Associates national champions Cal Poly of making a bid at its fifth straight title as they dismantled No. 5 Michigan's defense and won easily 14-4. The Mustangs were led by senior Kim Lutz who scored five goals. Cal Poly cruised to an 8-1 halftime lead and never looked back. The Mustangs will now face top-seeded UC-Santa Barbara in today's semifinal game at 5:30 p.m.
No. 6 Florida 13, No. 3 Navy 11 (OT) This was the game of the day on the women's side. No. 6 Florida took down No. 3 Navy 13-11 in overtime to send the Gators to their second straight US Lacrosse Women's Division Intercollegiate Associates final four. Florida senior Erin Hogan scored her second goal of the day late in the second half to tie the game at 11 to force overtime. In overtime, the Gators rode the momentum as Colleen Lenhart and Mills Wallace (five goals, two assists) scored goals to give Florida the upset win. Navy led 7-4 at the half.
Consolation Round No. 7 Colorado 20, No. 15 Lindenwood 9: The seventh-seeded Colorado Buffaloes had five players score two or more goals including five-goal performances from Lara Spencer Jessica Sandman. No. 8 Maryland 16, No. 16 Minnesota-Duluth 3: Eighth-seeded Maryland raced out to a 11-2 lead and coasted to a 16-3 victory. Amy Knell, Viviane Dussek and Megan Taneyhill scored three goals each for the Terrapins. No. 10 Delaware 18, No. 14 Washington 7: The 10th-seeded Delaware Blue Hens had 11 different goal scorers in their 18-7 victory over No. 14 Washington. The Blue Hens led 10-4 at the half. No. 13 Texas A&M 18, No. 12 Rhode Island 8: The 13th-seeded Aggies had five players score two or more goals, including three players that scored hat tricks, to win their consolation game over No. 12 Rhode Island 18-8. Texas A&M built a 10-5 halftime lead before closing out the second half with an 8-3 run.
Quarterfinals • Thursday, May 12
Note: The weather in Blaine, Minn. today was rainy, cold, windy and raw. Temperatures were in the mid-30's with wind gusts up to 25-30 mph equaling a wind chill of 25-27 degrees in a driving cold rain. Local Minneapolis-St. Paul forecasters said it was the coldest May 12 on record for this area.
No. 1 UC-Santa Barbara 19, No. 16 Minnesota-Duluth 2 Top-seeded UC-Santa Barbara had six different players score two or more goals as the Gauchos breezed by No. 16 Minnesota-Duluth in the women's division first round of the 2005 US Lacrosse Intercollegiate Associates National Championships in Blaine, Minn. UCSB junior Katie Gong and sophomore Brooke Julicher both scored five goals each to lead all-scorers. The Gauchos led 10-2 at the half and shutout the Bulldogs 9-0 in the second half. UCSB advances to Friday's quarterfinal round where they will face No. 9 Arizona State.
No. 2 Colorado State 22, No. 15 Lindenwood 4 Second-seeded Colorado State had little trouble with its opening round game against No. 15 Lindenwood as the Rams rolled 22-4 at the 2005 US Lacrosse Intercollegiate Associates National Championships in Blaine, Minn. CSU senior Juli Ramirez and junior Kate Sebesta scored five goals each to lead the Rams. The Rams led 10-2 at the half and outscored the Lions 12-2 in the second half. CSU will face No. 10 Santa Clara in the quarterfinals.
No. 3 Navy 16, No. 14 Washington 3 Third-seeded Navy sailed by No. 14 Washington 16-3 in the women's division first round of the 2005 US Lacrosse Intercollegiate Associates National Championships in Blaine, Minn. The Midshipmen will face No. 6 Florida in the quarterfinals.
No. 4 Cal Poly 13, No. 13 Texas A&M 3 Cal Poly, the four-time defending IA national champions, began its quest for a fifth title with a sound 13-3 win against No. 13 Texas A&M in the women's division first round of the 2005 US Lacrosse Intercollegiate Associates National Championships in Blaine, Minn. The Mustangs were led by senior Kim Lutz's four goals and Molly Barker's three goals and one assist. The Aggies got two goals from junior midfielder Megan Korce who had a huge first round game in last year's IA championship against Oregon. No. 4 Cal Poly will go up against No. 5 Michigan in tomorrow's quarterfinals. The Mustangs defeated the Wolverines 8-7 in last year's semifinals.
No. 5 Michigan 19, No. 12 Rhode Island 5 Michigan co-captain Karen Anderson scored five goals to pace the Wolverine offense to an easy 19-5 victory over No. 12 Rhode Island in the women's division first round of the 2005 US Lacrosse Intercollegiate Associates National Championships in Blaine, Minn. Senior midfielder Alyson Gilbride, another Michigan co-captain, scored two goals and passed out three assists to match Anderson's team-high five points. The Rams, making their first appearance at the IAs, were led by freshman Eileen Farrell's three goals. Michigan will face No. 4 Cal Poly, the four-time defending IA national champions, in tomorrow's quarterfinals in a rematch of last year's semifinals where the Mustangs won 8-7.
No. 6 Florida 10, No. 11 Delaware 6 The Florida defense kept No. 11 Delaware off the scoreboard in the second half to secure the Gators a first round 10-6 win in the 2005 US Lacrosse Intercollegiate Associates National Championships in Blaine, Minn. The Gators had their hands full with the Blue Hens in the first half as Florida only led 8-6 at the half. Florida senior Erin Hogan scored a team-high three goals. Delaware got two goals apiece from Jane Dunaway and Ellery Moses. The Gators will face No. 3 Navy in Friday's quarterfinals.
No. 10 Santa Clara 10, No. 7 Colorado 9 Santa Clara did it again. For the second straight year the Broncos made some noise in the IA tournament. The 10th-seeded Broncos defeated No. 7 Colorado 10-9 to pull off the upset. SC was led offensively by senior Kendall Reedy's four goals. Colorado's Lara Spencer and Maia McPherson scored three goals each in the losing effort. Last year, Santa Clara was No. 8 going into the tournament but knocked off top-seeded Navy and fourth-seeded Florida before losing to Cal Poly in the championship game. SC will try to continue their role as "IA Cinderella" as they take on second-seeded Colorado State in the quarterfinals.
No. 9 Arizona State 11, No. 8 Maryland 10 (OT) The 9th-seeded Arizona State took down No. 8 Maryland 11-10 in overtime in the women's division first round of the 2005 US Lacrosse Intercollegiate Associates National Championships in Blaine, Minn. Junior Sarah Ellis senior Jodi Gosselin scored four goals each for the Sun Devils, who were making their first appearance at the IAs. Maryland, also making its first appearance in the IAs, got five goals from senior Megan Taneyhill. ASU moves onto the quarterfinals where they will face top-seeded UC-Santa Barbara. |
