The US Lacrosse Foundation is proud to announce the 4th Annual US Lacrosse Open Putting Tournament sponsored by New Balance was a great success. Nearly 150 players participated in the 2004 event which was held on Tuesday, June 8 at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pennsylvania. David Fay, the executive director of the United States Golf Association, was the guest speaker for the evening. The tournament used a scramble and string format on the Merion Golf Club practice putting greens. The winning foursome of the event was Tony Resch, John McEvoy, Larry Needle and Bob Morey.

Over the last four years this event has raised over $250,000 in support of US Lacrosse initiatives and the national development of the sport.

Annual Event Background
The US Lacrosse Foundation holds this event every year at a prestigious golf course to raise critical funds to fuel the growth of the game and secure its future. Last year's Foundation Fall Ball Putting Tournament was held in September at the famed  Dedham Country and Polo Club in Dedham, Mass.

History of Merion Golf Club
To all true golfers, the name Merion conjures up stirring images. Merion's East Course is a traditional golf club where history has been made time and time again. The East Course was designed by Hugh I. Wilson in 1910, after an extended visit to Scotland and England studying their best courses. A report of the opening on September 12, 1912, saying that the course was "among experts, considered the finest inland links in the country" is still echoed today. Having experienced outstanding courses abroad, the 3rd hole was inspired by North Berwick's 15th hole (the Redan) and the 17th is reminiscent of the famed Valley of Sin at St. Andrew's 18th hole. On May 30, 1914, Merion opened its second eighteen, the West Course, also designed by Wilson.

The club has been host to four U.S. Opens – 1934, 1950, 1971 & 1981. The club has also hosted one World Amateur (1968) and two U.S. Amateurs – the first, in 1916, was the debut of the last course in which Robert T. "Bobby" Jones, Jr., then age 14, made his first national appearance and then again in 1930, when he won (the same year he closed his international career). In 1997, the club hosted the U.S. Girls' Junior Championship. Merion continues to make golf history to the present day. Sam Snead, Ben Hogan, Lloyd Mangrum, Cary Middlecoff, Jimmy Demaret, Arnold Palmer, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus, Lee Travino, Tom Watson, David Graham, Johnny Miller – Merion has known them all.
