BALTIMORE, July 29, 2013 — US Lacrosse announced today that 7NEWS in Denver has been selected to as the Official News, Weather and Sports Television Station of the 2014 Federation of International Lacrosse World Championship. 7NEWS and US Lacrosse, along with 7NEWS Spanish language station, Azteca Colorado, will work together to build awareness for the men’s lacrosse world championship throughout the region.
The FIL World Championship, the largest international lacrosse event in history, will be played at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park July 10 through July 19, 2014, and will be hosted by US Lacrosse.
As part of the partnership, 7NEWS and US Lacrosse will work together on the "7Healthy Kids Project," an effort aimed at bringing the community together to encourage healthy activity through the growing sport of lacrosse. “Our city continues to demonstrate its appreciation for the game of lacrosse and 7NEWS is thrilled to be included as Denver becomes the world’s stage for the sport’s international competition,” said 7Sports Anchor, Lionel Bienvenu. “Our partnership with The World Championships and US Lacrosse with our Healthy Kids initiative is a tremendous added benefit, as increasing opportunities for kids to play lacrosse is what they are all about.”
The partnership between 7NEWS and US Lacrosse will include co-development of programming directly related to the 2014 FIL Championships and participating teams from as many as 40 countries.
“Once we sat down with the 7NEWS team it was clear that they hold a very strong appreciation for the impact this event will have on the Denver metropolitan area and a genuine commitment to encouraging youth participation in active sports,” said Bill Schoonmaker, chief operating officer for US Lacrosse.
Tickets for the 2014 FIL World Championship went on sale to the Denver community in May and less than 1,900 gold packages remain with the championship still almost a year away. US Lacrosse will also host boys’ youth and men’s masters’ festivals that will be held in conjunction with the event at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.
