BALTIMORE, Sept. 20, 2012 — US Lacrosse today announced the launch of its Susie Ganzenmuller Observers Grant Program for women’s lacrosse officials. The program is currently accepting applications through Nov. 1, 2012 for the 2013 lacrosse season.
Much like the Scott Boyle Memorial Observer’s Grant Program for men’s officials, this program is designed to help develop young officials instead of simply evaluating them. As part of the program, experienced officials are trained in observation, evaluation and communication and then compensated to observe games officiated by newer officials. Each new official is observed at least twice in order to determine if he or she was able to implement the suggestions for improvement.
"Education and training of officials and coaches is a major factor in preserving the integrity of the game," said Lucia Perfetti Clack, US Lacrosse manager of officials and umpire development. "Offering this observation program for women’s officials is something we believe will not only help the program recipient, but also the greater lacrosse community."
A 2005 inductee to the National Hall of Fame, Ganzemuller has contributed decades of service to women's lacrosse, specifically, umpiring. In addition to umpiring 11 NCAA championship weekends and two World Cups, Ganzenmuller has conducted a total of 25 years of umpire training in seven countries. Her 15-plus years training stateside has made its mark at the national, district and local levels. The goal of this program is to emulate Ganzenmuller’s passion and attitude toward officials’ on-field development.
"I am very humbled that US Lacrosse has named this observer program in my honor as I have always loved training up-and-coming officials," said Ganzenmuller. "I have read about the men's program and it seems to be a very worthwhile program. The game is growing so fast that identifying able and gifted officials in different areas in the country is a great idea."
