BALTIMORE, March 20, 2012 - US Lacrosse has announced Gregory Barnard of Midlothian, Va., as the 2011 Gerald J. Carroll Award recipient. Barnard has served as head coach for the Midlothian High School varsity boys' lacrosse team for the past three years and has coached in several other capacities for more than a decade.
The Gerald J. Carroll Award was established in 1994 and annually recognizes one boys' high school coach nationwide. The award measures the success of a coach not in victories but in the care and guidance he gives to the balanced development the of young men who play the game.
"Having the opportunity to coach and be involved with lacrosse has truly added to the quality of my life," said Barnard. "The young men that I have had the privilege to coach over the years have made me a better and more responsible person. I am so blessed to be a part of this wonderful community that is lacrosse. Even though I never had the privilege to know Gerald Carroll, he has touched my life in a profound way with this tremendous honor. I welcome the responsibility to honor Mr. Carroll's legacy, and I am grateful to the Carroll family and US Lacrosse for their kind consideration."
In her nomination letter on behalf of Barnard, Fran Via, mother of a former player wrote, "In its first two years of existence the Midlothian varsity boys' team has twice received the US Lacrosse Richmond Chapter team sportsmanship award, voted on by lacrosse officials in the area. Greg teaches his players that respect of others is important and refocuses them when their emotions get out of hand. This is a direct reflection of the demeanor with which Greg expects his players to carry themselves both on and off the field."
The Gerald J. Carroll Award is a truly special award we present here at US Lacrosse," said Ann Carpenetti, US Lacrosse managing director of game administration. "It embodies many aspects of what coaches across all sports should strive. We are honored to present this award and humbled by Mr. Barnard's accomplishments both on and off the field with the youth over the last decade-plus."
