BALTIMORE, Feb. 15, 2012 — A gift by Dr. Lawrence A. Feldman, founder of LaxPower, Inc., to the US Lacrosse Foundation, the philanthropic arm of US Lacrosse, will allow US Lacrosse to honor four collegiate non-varsity players that demonstrate excellence on the field and in the classroom annually, the organization announced today.
US Lacrosse will honor a Player of the Year at the conclusion of each season in the US Lacrosse Women’s Collegiate Lacrosse Associates (USL WCLA) Divisions I and II and in the Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association (MCLA) Divisions I and II. Both organizations administer spring playing seasons for collegiate non-varsity lacrosse teams, representing a total of roughly 400 colleges and universities across the nation.
"Larry Feldman has been a leader in the lacrosse community for some time, and his gift to the US Lacrosse Foundation represents another tangible act of leadership in the development of our great game," said Susannah Chase Wittich, managing director of the US Lacrosse Foundation. "We are grateful to Larry for his generosity, which will help to provide well-deserved recognition to athletes who play for the love of the game and will help to provide opportunities for younger athletes to learn the game."
A portion of Feldman’s gift will support US Lacrosse’s efforts to expand the participation base of youth lacrosse.
"Lacrosse has been a passion of mine, and those who are passionate about the game certainly want to see it develop the right way," Feldman said. "It is my pleasure to make a contribution to US Lacrosse to support that responsible development of lacrosse and to recognize the top collegiate non-varsity scholar-athletes in the country."
The 2012 Amtahcha Award for the US Lacrosse WCLA Player of the Year will be selected by the US Lacrosse Women’s Game Committee and presented by a member of the US Lacrosse staff to the top scholar-athlete in the WCLA’s Divisions I and II at the US Lacrosse WCLA National Championships May 9-12 in Colorado Springs, Colo. The MCLA Player of the Year award will be presented to the top scholar-athlete in the MCLA’s Divisions I and II at its national championship tournaments May 14-19 in Greenville, S.C.
"We’re very appreciative of Larry Feldman’s gift to US Lacrosse that will allow the Women’s Collegiate Lacrosse Associates to recognize great players who also are great students," said Dave Holdsworth, chair of the US Lacrosse WCLA.
"On behalf of the Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association, I’d like to thank Larry Feldman for his gift that will provide deserving recognition to two of the top student-athletes in the MCLA each year," said Tony Scazzero, president of the MCLA. "By definition as a collegiate non-varsity lacrosse association, our student-athletes make the choice to devote extra time to continue their lacrosse careers while pursuing their degrees. With Larry’s gift, we’ll be able to honor outstanding players who have achieved excellence in the classroom, on the field, and in service to their community."
