BALTIMORE, June 19, 2013 — The US Lacrosse Northeast Championships, powered by Lacrosse Unlimited, come to Amherst, Mass., Friday through Sunday. Boys’ and girls’ teams from seven states will compete at the University of Massachusetts in the only youth lacrosse tournament in the region administered by the national governing body of lacrosse, which will host its sixth youth event at UMass since 2001.
Age divisions for the event are U11 (girls only) and U15, and the top four teams in the U15 division will earn automatic invitations with free or discounted registration to the US Lacrosse U15 National Championship, powered by Lacrosse Unlimited, July 23-25 (girls) and 26-28 (boys) at ESPN Wide World of Sports in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.
“US Lacrosse and the University of Massachusetts have enjoyed a long history of working together to host first-class youth lacrosse tournaments for players, coaches and families,” said Beth Porreca, director of special events at US Lacrosse and a recently honored industry leader in Connect magazine’s “40 Under 40” feature. “We’re looking forward to adding another great tournament to that history with our Northeast Championships this weekend.”
US Lacrosse has been running youth tournaments since its 1998 inception, hosting its Youth Festival, a predecessor of the Northeast Championships, at UMass in 2001-02 and 2005-07. Massachusetts has Eastern and Western chapters of US Lacrosse, and the two combine to service nearly 35,000 lacrosse players in US Lacrosse youth and high school membership categories.
There is no admission charge for spectators at the US Lacrosse Northeast Championships. Games begin at 4 p.m. Friday. Championship games in the U15 division are scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. Sunday.
Easton is the manufacturer sponsor of the US Lacrosse Northeast Championships, powered by Lacrosse Unlimited. Gatorade is the event’s official thirst quencher.
