BALTIMORE, Aug. 30, 2013 — After leading Team USA to its seventh world championship in July, Ricky Fried has been selected as head coach for the 2017 U.S. Women’s National Team, US Lacrosse announced on Friday.

Fried will lead Team USA as head coach through the 2017 Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) World Cup in Surrey, England, where the U.S. will seek a third consecutive world title and eighth overall. He led Team USA to a perfect 7-0 mark at the 2013 FIL World Cup in Oshawa, Ontario, where the U.S. outscored its opponents by a record 13.2 goals per game, including a 19-5 victory over Canada in the gold medal game. The U.S. also set records for goals in a tournament (127) and goals per game (18.1).

“I am honored to have the opportunity to represent my country and lead the national team for the next four years,” Fried said. “I look forward to working with all of the players, coaches, and US Lacrossestaff as we work together toward our common goals.”

Fried was appointed head coach in 2009, shortly after serving as assistant coach for the gold medal-winning U.S. women’s team at the 2009 FIL World Cup in Prague. He is currently in his ninth season at the helm of the Georgetown University women’s team, where he has amassed a career record of 93-52.

Prior to Georgetown, Fried served as an assistant coach at Johns Hopkins University for nine seasons. He arrived at Hopkins after two years as an assistant at the Gilman (Md.) School and one season as an assistant at UMBC, his alma mater (’88).

“We’re thrilled to have Ricky back to lead Team USA toward another world title,” said Nathaniel Badder, US Lacrosse director of national teams. “His on-field accomplishments speak for themselves. While we thoroughly considered many qualified applicants, the selection committee determined that moving forward with Ricky as the head coach best positions the team to bring home an eighth gold medal. We have no doubt Ricky will continue to be a great ambassador for our organization and the sport.”

Fried, along with a selection committee, will now begin the process of identifying assistant coaches and support staff for the 2017 U.S. Women’s National Team. Open positions include three assistant coaches, one manager and one assistant manager/videographer. Interested candidates are encouraged to apply at uslacrosse.org/uswomen. The deadline for applications is Thursday, Sept. 19.
