BALTIMORE — US Lacrosse is now accepting applications for 2014 physical education lacrosse workshop grants and soft lacrosse equipment grants. Both grant applications can be accessed online at uslacrosse.org/PEgrant, and submitted to US Lacrosse through March 1, 2014. Grant awards will be announced by the end of March.

Soft lacrosse is a co-ed version of lacrosse that utilizes plastic sticks with specially molded-heads and a large, soft ball. This modified equipment is designed for youth to achieve quick success executing the basics skills of lacrosse (cradling, scooping, passing, catching and shooting). No additional protective equipment is required.

The US Lacrosse Soft Lacrosse Equipment Grant, targeted for schools and community-based organizations, provides a set of 30 soft lacrosse sticks, 30 soft lacrosse balls, one (1) copy of the US Lacrosse Physical Education Curriculum Guide and (1) copy of the Teaching Soft-Stick Lacrosse DVD. The easy-to-use curriculum guide provides school teachers with age specific unit plans, lesson plans, drills, games, educational handouts, cross-curricular activities and more. Community-based organizations wishing to utilize the equipment in non-academic environments are also encouraged to apply for this grant.

The US Lacrosse Physical Education Workshop Grant provides in-service training for up to 30 educators in a school district or school system. In addition to the in-service training (3 hours in length), this grant awards a set of soft lacrosse equipment to each school that is represented at the workshop. Participating educators will leave the workshop feeling confident and able to teach students how to play co-ed soft lacrosse in an age-appropriate and safe manner.

“Soft lacrosse is a fun and friendly way for young players to learn the game,” said Meghan Mulford, programs manager at US Lacrosse. “It’s our hope that these grants will assist schools and community groups in introducing the game to new participants and that some of these young players will be inspired to then begin playing the traditional versions of men’s and women’s lacrosse.”

Last year, US Lacrosse awarded eight physical education training workshops and provided soft lacrosse equipment to 191 schools and organizations, with a financial investment of over $145,000. Equipment manufacturer STX serves as a valuable partner in assisting US Lacrosse with this program.

Whether you're new to lacrosse or already familiar with "the fastest game on two feet," soft lacrosse is a great way to introduce the sport to your students and/or community. For additional information about PE lacrosse workshops and soft lacrosse, visit our grant application page.
