US Lacrosse President and CEO Steve Stenersen has been awarded the 2014 Peter Kohn Award by the Fellowship of Christian Athletes for service above and beyond the call of duty.
Stenersen was presented with the award by US Lacrosse Foundation board member and FCA Hall of Champions member Frank Kelly III at the annual FCA Lacrosse Breakfast at the US Lacrosse National Convention, Saturday, Jan. 11 in Philadelphia. For the past 24 years, FCA Lacrosse has hosted a free breakfast to encourage and thank lacrosse coaches for their commitment to the game of lacrosse.
FCA Lacrosse hosts an annual Saturday morning breakfast that features a guest speaker and the Peter Kohn award at the Convention. The presence of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes at the Convention creates a unique platform to encourage and challenge lacrosse coaches to leave a positive legacy in their communities that will last forever.
“I’m truly humbled by this honor, which means even more to me because my son is involved in the FCA lacrosse program, and I had the good fortune to know Peter Kohn and what his example continues to represent in our sport,” Stenersen said. “I’m incredibly fortunate to have had the opportunity to combine my passion for lacrosse, and the impact that a positive lacrosse experience can have on a child, with my career. This recognition is a reflection of the collective efforts of the hundreds of staff members and leadership volunteers throughout the country who have worked tirelessly to advance US Lacrosse and the sport over the years, and it’s my privilege to accept it on their behalf, as well.”
Peter Kohn was one of the most beloved and unique figures in the lacrosse world. For 50 years, Kohn was connected to the sport of lacrosse. A recent subject of a documentary chronicling his life, Kohn started as a field manager for the Park School in Baltimore in 1954. His role as team manager continued with the U.S. National Team from 1978 to 1998, the North-South All-Star game for over 25 years, club teams in the United States Club Lacrosse Association for over 20 years, Middlebury College from 1981 to 2003 and numerous other lacrosse events over the years. The lacrosse field at Middlebury was named in his honor and he was previously inducted into the US Lacrosse New England Chapter Hall of Fame. Peter served as a volunteer with FCA Lacrosse from 1988 until his recent death in 2009. He was, and still is, one of the most recognized figures within the game of lacrosse.
Every year the Peter Kohn award is given to a member of the lacrosse community who best represents the scripture: “Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends,” (John 15:13).
