BALTIMORE - US Lacrosse recently joined more than 100 other organizations in endorsing a letter sent from the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) to President Barack Obama, urging him to include comments in his State of the Union speech to promote the importance of physical activity as a way to create healthy lifestyles. Specifically, the ACSM letter respectfully asks the President to “dedicate a portion of your address to the benefits and power of physical activity.”
The ACSM letter cites active and healthy lifestyles as key deterrents in reducing health care costs, preventing chronic disease, enhancing productivity and generally, improving the quality of an individual’s life.
The letter outlines several strategies for encouraging a healthier America through physical activity and exercise.
“As the national governing body for lacrosse, we actively promote our sport as a fun and exciting way for people to keep moving and stay fit,” said Dr. Bruce Griffin, director of health and sport safety. “We want everyone to experience it, from youth through the masters’ levels, and we are constantly working to increase access to this transformative sport.”
The letter to the President notes that numerous research studies reinforce the link between maintaining health through physical activity and exercise with preventing obesity, reducing diabetes, and countering heart and bone disease. The letter also highlights the success of the First Lady’s Let’s Move! initiative and other programs in stemming the rise in childhood obesity.
The letter’s co-signers represent medical and public health associations, trade groups, sports organizations and academic entities, among others. Some of the other sports’ national governing bodies that have co-signed include USA Cycling, USA Racquetball, USA Table Tennis, USA Volleyball and USA Weightlifting.
The American College of Sports Medicine has long advocated for physical activity as a public health measure, based on research published in its journals and the experiences of its members. The full letter sent to the President can be viewed here.
President Obama’s fifth State of the Union address is scheduled for Tuesday, January 28.
