BALTIMORE, March 1, 2013 — US Lacrosse, with sponsorship from the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA), today announced the US Lacrosse Women's National Tournament Scholarship Program that provides financial aid to officials interested in working the annual tournament. Apply by Friday, March 8, for a scholarship to work the 2013 US Lacrosse Women's National Tournament, May 25-26 at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa.
As part of the three-year deal and starting in 2013, the IWLCA commits to providing US Lacrosse $7,500 per year for scholarships to allocate to officials who are interested in working at the US Lacrosse Women's National Tournament. The US Lacrosse Officials Subcommittee, the US Lacrosse Training Committee and the IWLCA will review all scholarship applications and select recipients by March 15 of each year.
"We are excited to partner with US Lacrosse to create the National Tournament Scholarship Program to aid in the growth and learning opportunities for women’s lacrosse officials," said Liz Robertshaw, IWLCA president. "As a coaching organization we continue to look for ways to help grow the game, and one area we felt we could make a large impact is in helping expand our pool of high level experienced officials. The tournament attracts some of the best high school, college and post-collegiate players in the nation, and we want to help make this opportunity more accessible for officials to work on their skills in a great environment."
Only Local-rated officials (with a recommendation from their Board Chair) and District-rated officials are eligible to apply for the scholarship. The tournament provides training for officials who are working to improve their three-person officiating skills, which are commonly used in collegiate contests, or who are trying to achieve a National rating.
"The US Lacrosse Women’s National Tournament is a bellwether event for women’s game officials who are looking to work collegiate contests," said Lucia Perfetti Clark, officials education and training manager at US Lacrosse. "New National ratings happen at the tournament, along with a District Clinic and observations for the national observation program. Exposure to these programs starts with getting there and working games. It’s the one time of year that many National Rated officials are assembled at the same tournament, so up-and-coming officials also have great opportunities to network and meet new mentors at the tournament. This scholarship is going to expose more officials to this great event, and that’s such a great thing. We are very grateful that the IWLCA is partnering with us."
The 2013 scholarships will be awarded in different amounts depending on the distance from the tournament location, and as follows:
Super Region 6 - $300 per scholarship
Super Region 5 - $300 per scholarship
Super Region 4 - $125 per scholarship
Super Region 2 - $125 per scholarship
Super Region 1 - $125 per scholarship
Note: Super Region 3 (Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware) will not receive scholarships due to the proximity of the tournament.
The recipients will be announced and notified Friday, March 15, and receive scholarship money after completion of the tournament.
