The National Lacrosse Hall of Fame has annually inducted individuals based on outstanding lacrosse achievement and/or contribution since 1957. The mission of the Lacrosse Hall of Fame is to honor men and women, past and present, who by their deeds as players, coaches, officials and/or contributors, and by the example of their lives, personify the great contribution of the sport of lacrosse to our way of life.
In a continuing effort to strengthen and improve the Hall of Fame's nomination process, the National HOF Review Committee recently completed an exhaustive study examining the criteria used for Hall of Fame nominations.
Based on the committee's recommendations, which received approval from the US Lacrosse Board of Directors in January, 2008, a new nomination and selection process has been adopted for use begininng with the Hall of Fame's 2009 Induction Class.

Goal: "To select the absolute best of the best, within the context of an individual's era of participation".
Character Beyond Reproach The following are possible areas of evaluation used to determine Character Beyond Reproach: • Practice and perpetuation of positive sportsmanship on and off the field • Positive relations with peers, opponents, subordinates and supervisors within the game • Service within lacrosse development initiatives • Graduation rate (coaches) • Service and honors within civic, community and military community o Committee note: Service, not Honors, are better at determining character • Publicly known conviction of any crimes/felonies o All nominees that satisfy the minimum criteria will provide consent to undergo a criminal background check * o Only those nominees that are being seriously considered by the Ballot Committee for inclusion on the Ballot shall be subject to criminal background checks
* It must be clearly stated within the publicly posted process description that a potential criminal background check is a part of the nomination/selection process.
Minimum Criteria and Induction Categories
Category: PLAYER
Minimum Criteria for Men and Women • Must be retired from playing the game for at least ten years OR must have had at least ten years lapse from a scheduled college graduation year and be retired* from the game o Note: College attendance is not a prerequisite for consideration • Must be inducted into at least one US Lacrosse Chapter Hall of Fame o Exception noted where greatest lacrosse achievements and contributions occurred in an area where no US Lacrosse Chapter Hall of Fame is established and active • Must have played collegiate lacrosse in the United States of America • Must have character beyond reproach
* retired = not participating at the level of play for which candidate is being evaluated for induction
Accomplishment Criteria for Men and Women To be eligible in this category all nominees must have achieved at least one of the following criteria: • 2-time 1st Team Collegiate All-America OR • A combination of 3-time 1st, 2nd or 3rd Team Collegiate All-America OR • 2-time national collegiate player award recognition (below) OR • USLIA or IWLCA recognition o Player of the Year, Attacker of the Year, Midfielder of the Year, Defender of the Year, Goalie of the Year
• 2-time U.S. Elite Team member (men-World Championship team, women-World Cup team) OR • 1-time U.S. Elite Team member (men-World Championship team, women-World Cup team), with international playing honors (below) OR
ILF or IFWLA recognition o All-World Position Player – named to All-World Team o World Championship/Cup Tournament MVP o World Championship/Cup Offensive or Defensive MVP
• 3-time U.S. Touring Team member OR • 2-time 1st Team All-Pro (MLL and NLL) OR • A combination of 3-time 1st, 2nd or 3rd Team All-Pro (MLL and NLL) OR • 2-time Professional Player of the Year (MLL and/or NLL)
If an individual does not satisfy any of the foregoing criteria, but the Ballot Committee unanimously determines that such individual fully and completely satisfies the spirit and intent of such criteria and such individual therefore represents the best of the best within the context of his/her era of participation, such individual may nevertheless be included on the ballot by the Ballot Committee.
Category: COACH
Minimum Criteria for Men and Women • Must be at least five years retired* or at least twenty years active as a lacrosse coach at the high school, collegiate, international and/or professional level. • Must be inducted into at least one US Lacrosse Chapter Hall of Fame o Exception noted where greatest lacrosse achievements and contributions occurred in an area where no US Lacrosse Chapter Hall of Fame is established and active • Must have character beyond reproach
*retired = not participating at the level of play for which candidate is being evaluated for induction
Accomplishment Criteria for Men and Women To be eligible in this category all nominees must have achieved at least one of the following criteria: • 2-time collegiate national championship coach OR • U.S. Team coach, with substantial coaching achievements within college or high school ranks (to be defined) OR • 2-time national collegiate coach award recognition (below) OR • USLIA or IWLCA recognition (Coach of the Year)
• Must have an accumulated career winning percentage of: o High School Head Coach: 80% or greater o College Head Coach: 65% or greater • Must have accumulated total career wins of: o High School Head Coach: 350 or greater o College Head Coach: 250 or greater
If an individual does not satisfy any of the foregoing criteria, but the Ballot Committee unanimously determines that such individual fully and completely satisfies the spirit and intent of such criteria and such individual therefore represents the best of the best within the context of his/her era of participation, such individual may nevertheless be included on the ballot by the Ballot Committee.
Category: CONTRIBUTOR/BUILDER
Contributions as an Official
Minimum Criteria for Men and Women • Must be at least five years retired* or at least twenty years as an active official/umpire • Must be inducted into at least one US Lacrosse Chapter Hall of Fame o Exception noted where greatest lacrosse achievements and contributions occurred in an area where no US Lacrosse Chapter Hall of Fame is established and active • Must have character beyond reproach
*retired = not participating at the level of play for which candidate is being evaluated for induction
Accomplishment Criteria for Men and Women To be eligible in this category all nominees must have achieved at least one of the following criteria: • Officiate 3 Collegiate Division I National Championships OR • Officiate 6 Collegiate Division I Final Four tournament games OR • Officiate an elite international competition (Men-World Championship, Women-World Cup) and at least two final four collegiate playoff OR one collegiate Division I national championship game
If an individual does not satisfy any of the foregoing criteria, but the Ballot Committee unanimously determines that such individual fully and completely satisfies the spirit and intent of such criteria and such individual therefore represents the best of the best within the context of his/her era of participation, such individual may nevertheless be included on the ballot by the Ballot Committee.
Contributions as an Administrator or Developer
Minimum Criteria for Men and Women • Must have demonstrated long, dedicated and exceptional service and contributions to the game • A Contributor must be at least 20 years active with the sport of lacrosse in one or more capacities • Must be inducted into at least one US Lacrosse Chapter Hall of Fame o Exception noted where greatest lacrosse achievements and contributions occurred in an area where no US Lacrosse Chapter Hall of Fame is established and active • Must have character beyond reproach
Accomplishment Criteria for Men and Women To be eligible in this category all nominees must have achieved at least two of the following criteria: • Serve in a national leadership position for development, management or governance of the game for at least ten years (not consecutive) • Serve on a national lacrosse committee or council for at least ten years (not consecutive) • Serve in a historical regional leadership position for development, management or governance of the game for at least ten years (not consecutive) • Create or establish a recognizable and tangible contribution to the game that has fundamentally impacted the game in a positive manner o To include, but not be limited to processes, system of play, evaluation methods and industry achievement
If an individual does not satisfy any of the foregoing criteria, but the Ballot Committee unanimously determines that such individual fully and completely satisfies the spirit and intent of such criteria and such individual therefore represents the best of the best within the context of his/her era of participation, such individual may nevertheless be included on the ballot by the Ballot Committee.
Additional Honors
Identification/Selection Process • It is the responsibility of the Ballot Committee to identify individuals for the Lifetime Achievement Award and the Team Distinction Award. • It is the responsibility of the Voting Committee to approve (by an established approval percentage) those to receive these awards by a super majority vote of at least 75%
LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT To recognize and honor the lifetime accomplishments, impact and/or contributions of an individual to sport of lacrosse.
This honor is not considered as induction and can be recognized and presented annually as a national honor bestowed by the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame.
TEAM DISTINCTION To recognize honor the accomplishments, impact and/or contributions of an entire team achieved during a specific era of participation.
This honor is not considered as induction and can be recognized and presented every five years as a national honor bestowed by the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame.
Ballot and Voting Committee Structure
Ballot Committee
Committee Size: 8
Committee Term: 4 years, with one term renewal
Committee Make Up: Collectively, the committee members must represent and possess the utmost lacrosse knowledge and geographic and historical expertise. They must be very knowledgeable of the game, been involved with the sport for a significant amount of time and at a significant level, have a sense of history of the game.
Committee Task: Through comprehensive evaluation of eligible candidates at an in-person meeting, annually identify those individuals that are to be included on the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame Ballot. The Ballot Committee deems all individuals on the ballot worthy of induction.
Prior to any voting, through a meeting or conference call, the Ballot Committee will present the ballot to the Voting Committee. At which time the Ballot Committee can field any questions regarding the information presented on the 12 ballot candidates. No voting occurs at this meeting.
All ballots are submitted by the Voting Committee members anonymously.
The Ballot Committee will also serve as members of the Voting Committee.
Ballot Size: 12 individuals – all categories Must include biographical and accomplishment information for each candidate.In addition, a committee statement noting why each individual is deemed eligible for consideration for nomination.
Vote Required to be Included on the Ballot: Each individual must receive a minimum of an 80% vote of approval from the Ballot Committee to be included on the ballot.
Voting Committee
Committee Size: 20 (Includes Ballot Committee members)
Committee Term: 4-year limit, based on consistence voting participation, with one term renewal
Committee Make Up: Must be very knowledgeable of the game, been involved with the sport for a significant amount of time and at a significant level, have a sense of history of the game. May be populated with past Ballot Committee or Nomination Committee members)
Committee Task: Through completion and submission of the ballot, annually select those identified for induction into the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame.
Voting Protocol: Each Voting Committee member must rank the 12 candidates that appear on the ballot 1-12, 1 being their top choice/most qualified candidate and 12 being the last choice/least qualified candidate.
Voting Value/Tallying: For each ranking vote, a candidate receives a point value based on the following scale: Rank/Value 1/12 2/11 3/10 4/9 5/8 6/7 7/6 8/5 9/4 10/3 11/2 12/1
Induction Criteria: Once all votes are tallied, the total number of points is generated for each candidate. Those candidates receiving at least 180 of the total points available (based on a 4th highest ranking by 20 voters which places a candidate in the top 25%) would be elected. Based on this system a maximum of 4 individuals (per committee) can be elected annually.
In addition, if at least 4 individuals do not receive at least 180 points, the top 4 vote getters (determined by total points received) would be elected, provided that each of the top 4 vote getters receives at least 140 points (based on a 6th highest ranking by 20 voters).
All individuals that receive equal point totals that qualify them for induction shall be deemed to be elected for induction into the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame.
All ballots must be signed and returned.
Ballots results are compiled anonymously.
