Paul Wehrum began his lacrosse career as a crease attackman at Freeport High School on Long Island, winning the Long Island South Shore Championships in 1967 and earning First-Team All-South Shore honors in 1968. At Cortland State University, Wehrum was a three-time All-American attackman. He played for and captained the North squad in the 1972 North/South Collegiate All-Star game. He also received first-team SUNY Conference honors in 1970-72.

He became an assistant coach at Cortland State in 1973, the year the team won the Division III NCAA Championship. He was also an assistant coach at Lynbrook High School and Nassau Community College from 1974-79. In 1979, he became the head coach at Herkimer County Community College. Wehrum has coached his teams to win 16 consecutive National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region III Championships and seven NJCAA National Championships (1988-89, '92-96). He holds the collegiate record of 59 straight wins. He has been selected as the NJCAA Coach of the Year four times, earning the honor in 1985, 1986, 1992 and 1994.

He is currently the president of the NJCAA Lacrosse Coaches Association. Wehrum was the assistant coach for the victorious U.S. Team in the 1998 World Lacrosse Championships. Wehrum is a full professor and was a recipient of the Chancellor's Award for excellence in teaching in 1997. Wehrum currently resides in Little Falls, N.Y., with his wife, Christine, and his children Brett and Lindsay. Paul Wehrum was inducted to the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame as a truly great coach.
