Theodore W. "Ted" Bauer began his lacrosse career at Gilman School where he played three years on the varsity team. In 1970, Bauer was selected the Maryland Scholastic Association Player of the Year.

At Washington & Lee University, Bauer was a three-time First-Team All-American in 1972, 1973 and 1974. A midfielder for the Generals, Bauer was instrumental in the team reaching the NCAA semi-finals before suffering losses in 1973 to the University of Maryland and in 1974 to Johns Hopkins University. In 1973, Bauer won the Wheelwright Trophy as Washington & Lee's Most Valuable Player. Bauer represented Washington & Lee in the 1974 North/South Collegiate All-Star game.

Bauer played for the Chesapeake Lacrosse Club from 1975-1982, earning Club All-Star honors in 1975, 1976 and 1977. He was president and club representative of Chesapeake L.C. from 1978-82. Bauer was also an assistant coach for the Chesapeake L.C. in 1986, 1988 and 1989.

Since 1983, Bauer has been a member of the All-American Selection Committee, serving as chairman since 1985. He also served on the Hall of Fame Nominating Committee from 1985-90.

Bauer, owner of the Mt. Washington Tavern in Baltimore, continues his commitment to the sport of lacrosse through sponsorship of club lacrosse teams in national tournaments. He is Washington & Lee University's first inductee to the Lacrosse Hall of Fame.
