Emmer Named As 2002 US Men's Lacrosse Team Coach
Baltimore - US Lacrosse has announced that Army head coach Jack
Emmer has been selected as head coach for the 2002 US Men's Lacrosse
Team, which will compete for the world championship in Australia.
"I think the committee did a great job of selecting an exceptionally
well-qualified candidate from a pool of outstanding candidates,"
said Dave Urick, chair of the coach selection committee and the
head men's lacrosse coach at Georgetown University. "The committee
is looking forward to working with Jack on the selection process
for the staff."
Three assistant coaches for the team will be announced during the
US Lacrosse Men's Division Convention and Coaches Clinic Awards
Luncheon on Jan. 13, 2001 in Philadelphia. Team player tryouts will
be held June 14-17, 2001 at the University of Delaware.
With 281 career victories, Emmer is the winningest active coach
in college lacrosse. Since taking over at Army in 1984, Emmer has
compiled a record of 141-100 with five NCAA tournament berths. His
1993 Army squad won a school-record 12 games.
Prior to arriving at Army, Emmer had successful stints at Cortland
State and Washington and Lee. Emmer went 32-6 in three seasons at
Cortland, leading the Red Dragons to the 1972 NCAA University Division
semifinals. In 11 seasons at W&L, Emmer was 108-47 and led the
Generals to seven NCAA Division I tournament appearances, including
three trips to the semifinals. Emmer was named the national coach
of the year following the 1972, 1973 and 1974 seasons.
The 2002 International Lacrosse Federation World Championship will
be held from July 6-14 in Perth, Australia. The US defeated Canada
15-14 in overtime to win the 1998 championship at Homewood Field
in Baltimore.
US Lacrosse, a 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization, is the national
governing body of men's and women's lacrosse.
