US Women's Lacrosse Elite Squad Named

Head coach Sue Stahl has announced the 24 players selected to participate on the United States training team for the 2001 World Cup to be played July 7-14 in High Wycombe, England. The roster will be pared down to the IFWLA-mandated size of 16 players following the US Lacrosse Women's Division National Tournament in late May.

"I thought the tryouts went well," said US head coach Sue Stahl. "It's obviously the most difficult thing you do as a coach. I tried to pick those players that I thought had a real shot at making the final 16."

The elite team includes 15 of the 16 players that played on the US team that toured Australia last summer. That team went 11-0, winning all of its games by at least six goals.

Returning to the team is goalie Sue Heether, who did not play with the team during its Australia tour last summer due to ankle surgery. The 1990 Loyola graduate played on the U.S. teams that won the World Cup in 1993 and 1997.

Also included on the final 24 are four current collegiate players Ð Quinn Carney (Maryland), Erin Elbe (Georgetown), Kate Kaiser (Duke) and Sheehan Stanwick (Georgetown).

Stahl has coached the U.S. to three straight World Cup titles, but doesn't expect things to be handed to her team this summer. "It's a whole new Cup and a whole new team," she said. "It's going to be very challenging and difficult. If people expect us to just go over there and win they're sorely mistaken. There's definitely some strong competition, most likely from Australia and England."
