US Men's Team Alters Participation Rule
MLL tryouts to count towards 75% requirement
Baltimore Since the inception of the World Championships in 1967,
the United States has sent the best team available to the World
Games. Toward that end, and to ensure the fitness of the US Team
participants, a rule was enacted requiring that players interested
in trying out for the US Men's Team actively participate in 75 percent
of their club or college team's games to be eligible to tryout.
With the changing landscape of lacrosse at the post-collegiate
club level, and to ensure that all players who have submitted an
application for the US Team tryouts this June at the Univesity of
Delaware are given equal consideration, the Team Competition Committee
that will select the 120 individuals who are invited to try out
will credit the time club players participate in practices with
Major League Lacrosse toward the 75 percent requirement. Thus, a
player can satisfy the 75 percent rule through a combination of
club games and MLL practices.
"The 75 percent rule was created to make sure that US Team
candidates are in good physical condition and lacrosse playing condition,"stated
Larry Quinn, chair of the Team Competition Committee. "We want
all qualified players to be given an equal opportunity to compete
for a roster spot on the US Team and we do not want to penalize
any player who wishes to experience the MLL until the players are
selected on Memorial Day weekend for the US Team tryouts."
The tryouts for the US Men's Team will be held June 14-17 at the
University of Delaware. A record total of more than 350 individuals
submitted applications for the tryouts. From that pool, 120 players
will be invited to the tryouts. Notification of the players selected
for the tryout will be made on May 25.
US Lacrosse, a 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization, is the national
governing body of men's and women's lacrosse.
