US Lacrosse Tabs Boys’ Latin’s Shriver As 2003 U.s. Men’s Under-19 Team Coach

Three standout prep coaches to join Shriver as U.S. seeks to defend '99 championship

Baltimore — US Lacrosse today announced that Bob Shriver, head boys’ lacrosse coach at the Boys’ Latin School in Baltimore, will coach the U.S. Men’s Under-19 Team that will compete in the 2003 International Lacrosse Federation (ILF) World Championship at Towson (Md.) University. Shriver and his three assistants were selected among a pool of 21 applicants by the 2003 U.S. Men’s Under-19 Team Competition Committee.

"This is a terrific honor. I am very happy and am looking forward to the challenge of coaching this team," said Shriver. "It will be fun to have the tournament here. There won’t be any heavy travel, so we should get a large number of [player] applicants, which should increase the talent pool. It should be fun."

Assisting Shriver will be three successful prep coaches from across the nation: Sam Carpenter of East Chapel Hill (N.C.) High School, John Kenney of Detroit Country Day School, and John Tucker of Loyola (Md.) Blakefield. Carpenter was named the 2000 North Carolina High School Lacrosse Coach of the Year, while Kenney earned the same award in Michigan in 2001. Tucker guided Loyola to the 2001 Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) Championship.

"The committee was very impressed with the quality and geographic diversity of the applicant pool for the four coveted positions," said Jody Martin, US Lacrosse Men’s Division Director. "The decision was difficult, but we feel that the selected staff is outstanding and will give the U.S. team its best chance of defending its 1999 ILF World Championship."

Shriver is no stranger to international lacrosse competition. He served as an assistant coach on the 1988 and 1999 U.S. under-19 teams that won world championships. He also was selected as an alternate player on the 1974 and ‘78 U.S. senior teams after earning All-America honors at Washington (Md.) College in ’72 and ’73.

Since 1980 Shriver has been the head coach at Boys’ Latin, his alma mater. He has taken the Lakers to the MIAA playoffs in 15 of the last 17 years, including eight trips to the A Conference finals and three championships.

"Coach Shriver brings a wealth of international experience to the position and his record as a head coach speaks for itself," said Martin.

US Lacrosse is hosting the joint men’s and women’s under-19 world championships at Minnegan Stadium in Towson June 26—July 6, 2003. Wendy Kridel, head girls’ lacrosse coach at the Bryn Mawr School in Baltimore, was named the women’s under-19 team coach on October 22.
