2002 US Men’s Lacrosse Team Set to Make its Debut

11 colleges will also compete at the Price Modern Lacrosse for Leukemia Tourney

BALTIMORE — The 2002 United States Men’s Lacrosse team will play together for the first time during the 4th Annual Price Modern Lacrosse for Leukemia tournament on Saturday, Oct. 6 at the McDonogh School in Owings Mills, Md. A total of 11 college teams will also compete in the fall ball tournament and admission is $10 per car.

The U.S. team will play three games, beginning with a 10 a.m. game against Johns Hopkins. The U.S. will then meet Georgetown at 11 a.m. and Towson at 1 p.m. Other colleges scheduled to compete include Butler, Cornell, Loyola, UMBC, Ohio State, Pennsylvania, Quinnipiac and Washington College.

The 23-member U.S. team includes two players—attackman Darren Lowe and midfielder Andy Ross—from the 1998 team which won the International Lacrosse Federation world championship with a thrilling 15-14 victory over Canada at Homewood Field on the Johns Hopkins campus in Baltimore. Lowe was the 1992 national player of the year at Brown and Ross was a three-time All-American at Navy. Other prominent players on the U.S. team include attackman Kevin Lowe, the all-time leading scorer at Princeton; attackman Michael Powell, the national attackman of the year as a freshman at Syracuse last year; and Trevor Tierney, the nation’s outstanding goalie last year when he led Princeton to the national championship. Doug Shanahan, the 2001 Tewaraaton Trophy winner, is currently playing on the Hofstra football team and is the one member of the team not expected to play. The U.S. team is coached by Army head coach Jack Emmer, the winningest active coach in college lacrosse with 289 career victories.

Proceeds from the tournament benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. For more information, contact the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society at (410) 825-2500 or visit their Web site at www.leukemia-lymphoma.org. For more information about the U.S. men’s team visit www.lacrosse.org.
