Tryouts Set To Begin For Us Men's Lacrosse Team
University of Delaware to host event from June 14-17
BALTIMORE Some of the nations
finest lacrosse players will be competing for 23 coveted roster
spots on the 2002 US Mens Lacrosse team this weekend at the
University of Delaware. A total of 121 players will be trying out
for the team, which will compete in the 2002 International Lacrosse
Federation World Championship next July in Perth, Australia.
The tryouts will take place from June 14-17, highlighted by evening
sessions on Friday, June 15 and Saturday, June 16 that are open
to the public. Three consecutive one-hour games will take place
each of those nights, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at Rullo Stadium on
the Delaware campus. Adult admission for the games is $3 and youth
13 and under will be admitted free of charge.
Highlighting the tryout participants are three members -- Darren
Lowe, Andy Ross and Zack Colburn -- of the 1998 U.S. team which
won the gold medal by defeating Canada 15-14 in overtime. Lowe,
an attackman, is a 1992 graduate of Brown where he was the national
player of the year as senior. He scored what proved to be the game-winning
goal in the win over Canada. Ross, a midfielder, is a 1997 graduate
of Navy where he was a three-time All-American. Colburn, a defenseman,
is a 1984 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and will be
attempting to make his fourth straight US team. Colburn played on
the 1990, 1994 and 1998 teams.
Additionally, 10 of the 12 first team All-America selections from
this past collegiate season will be participating. That group includes
Tewaraaton Trophy winner Doug Shanahan, a midfielder from Hofstra,
and the Glatzel brothersTom, an attackman from Notre Dame,
and John, a defensemen from Syracuse.
US Lacrosse, a 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization, is the national
governing body of mens and womens lacrosse.
