Sonoma State Men, Cal Poly Women Win Us Lacrosse
Intercollegiate Associates National Championships
St. Louis Top seeds Sonoma (Calif.) State University
and California Polytechnic State University-San Luis Obispo captured
the US Lacrosse Men's and Women's Intercollegiate Associates
National Championships, respectively, over the weekend at the Anheuser-Busch
Center. The Cossacks of Sonoma State dethroned defending champion
Colorado State University, 13-10, to win the sixth annual men's
tournament, while Cal Poly repeated as the title-winner in the second
annual women's tournament with a 10-5 decision over Air Force
Academy.
Sonoma State (23-1) used a five-goal performance from Ben Alexander
and outscored the Rams 6-3 over the title game's final 18 minutes
to win its first-ever national championship. Will Burson
added three goals and one assist. Tournament defensive MVP goaltender
Dominic Gomez made 19 saves in 60 minutes of action. Alexander
netted three of his goals after Colorado State tied the game at
seven late in the third quarter. The Cossacks, under the direction
of coach Doug Carl, won all four tournament games, and midfielder
M.J. Crickmore, who had two goals in the final, was named
the tournament's overall MVP.
Cal Poly (21-2) spotted Air Force a 2-0 lead, but then five different
Mustangs scored consecutively as Cal Poly seized control and never
looked back. Bridget Mulhern ended the run with a marker
with 9:19 remaining in the first half, then she scored three of
the Mustangs' next four goals to give Cal Poly an insurmountable
10-3 lead. Mulhern and Ashley Kiersted earned all-tournament
team honors, and goalie Robin Varney was named MVP as Cal
Poly finished 3-0 in the eight-team event.
Coach Brandon Badgley and the Mustangs won the 2001 national
championship with a 13-6 win over Navy and are now 7-0 in tournament
play.
