Cossacks sack Cougars to solidify hold on Top Spot in latest USL MDIA Top 25 Poll

(April 5th) The Sonoma State Cossacks turned back the #3 BYU Cougars of Brigham Young 16-9 in Provo last weekend in the week’s marquee match-up to solidify their #1 ranking in the latest US Lacrosse Men’s Division Intercollegiate Associates Top 25 poll. The Cossacks were the unanimous top pick of the 30 poll voters and also knocked off #5 Cal-Santa Barbara and #11 Texas A&M. Despite the setback, Brigham Young climbed one notch to #2 via decisive wins over then #2 Colorado State and #8 Stanford.

Colorado State stands in 3rd place, 49 points behind BYU. The Rams join #12 Buffalo, and #13 Texas A&M in Ann Arbor this weekend for the annual Michigan Invitational, hosted by the #7 Michigan Wolverines.

Undefeated Auburn (9-0) climbed a spot to rank 4th in the latest poll. The Tigers are pointing to an upcoming showdown with SELC rival #9 Virginia Tech. Following Auburn in the #5 spot are the Gauchos of California-Santa Barbara (8-3). UCSB has played 3 one-goal games in succession, sandwiching losses to # 1 Sonoma and #8 Cal around a win over NCAA Division 3 MIT.

Arizona (12-1) climbed a spot to #6. Only a 1-goal loss to #11 Cal Poly San Luis Obispo stands between the Wildcats and a perfect record. Michigan (8-2) follows in 7th and will be hosting the Michigan Invitational this weekend. The Wolverines are hoping to make the most of a home field advantage against 3rd ranked teams.

California’s Golden Bears (11-3) moved up to #8 in this poll ahead of #9 Virginia Tech (8-3) and #10 Stanford (5-4).
Leading the second "10" is Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (8-3) followed by undefeated Buffalo (6-0) at #12. The Bulls will get a taste of the best of the CCLA when they visit Ann Arbor this weekend. Texas A&M (10-4) lands at #13 following three tough losses out west. The Aggies are now focused on the upcoming match-up with arch-rival Texas.

Colorado (4-4) holds down the #14 spot. The Buffalos have games with Sonoma and Colorado State on the horizon. Florida (4-4) follows at #15 with the Texas Longhorns (7-3) in 16th. Next are the Bruins of UCLA (5-6) followed by Vanderbilt (4-3) at #18 and the Pacific Lutheran Lutes (5-1) rounding out the Top Twenty.

Defending UMLL champion Minnesota-Duluth (5-1) drops to #20 following a tough loss to #7 Michigan, ahead of #21 Utah (6-1). Defending Pioneer champion Rhode Island (2-1) sits in the #22 spot followed by #23 Missouri (7-2) and #24 Pittsburgh (3-2). New to the poll and ranked 25th are the Bridgewater State (MA) Bears (3-1). Bridgewater opened the season with an overtime win over Rhode Island.

Leading the teams also receiving votes are the University of Washington Huskies, followed by California-San Diego, Florida State, Boston University, and Georgia Tech.

The USL Men’s Division Intercollegiate Associates Top 25 Poll is voted biweekly during the season by 30 voters across the country. The USL MDIA consists of 140 member institutions in eight leagues across the United States and Canada and concludes the season with the national championships at St. Louis, Missouri from May 8 –11th, 2002.
