U.S. Men's Lacrosse Beats Canada 14-9

PERTH, Australia (July 9) —-Ryan Boyle (Princeton '04), Steve Dusseau (Georgetown '02) and Doug Shanahan (Hofstra '01) each scored three goals to lead the United States past archrival Canada 14-9 during the International Lacrosse Federation World Championship at the UWA Sports Park. The victory clinches the Blue Division for the United States (3-0), giving it the top seed for the semifinal round.

The U.S., which defeated Canada 15-14 in overtime to win the 1998 ILF World Championship in Baltimore, jumped out to a 4-2 lead after the first quarter as Dusseau scored all three of his goals in the quarter. The U.S. maintained the two-goal lead at the half after each team scored three goals in the second quarter.

In the third quarter the U.S. took advantage of a number of Canadian penalties, outscoring them 6-0 in the quarter to take a 13-5 lead. The U.S. stretched the lead to 14-5 in the fourth quarter. Paul Gait (Syracuse '90) scored two goals during a four-goal run by Canada to close the game, but it was too late. Canada finished the game with 29 penalties and the U.S. was whistled for nine.

Darren Lowe (Brown '92) added a goal and four assists for the U.S. and Scott Doyle (Georgetown '01) had two goals. Trevor Tierney (Princeton '01) played the first half for the U.S. in goal and made five saves. Chris LaMonica (Hartford '97) played the second half and made 10 saves. Gait led Canada with three goals and John Grant Jr. (Delaware '99) added two.

The U.S. wraps up pool play on Wednesday, July 10 against England. The U.S. will play in the semifinal round on July 12 against the winner of a play-in game between the fourth place team in the Blue Division and the first place team from the Red Division. That game will be played on July 11.
