U.S. Defeats Capital All-Stars, 20-6, in Second Exhibition Game

BETHESDA, MD. (June 1) — The 2002 U.S. Men’s Lacrosse Team started slowly against the Capital Lacrosse Club at Georgetown Prep, but scored 12 goals in the second and third periods and rolled to a 20-6 victory in the second game of its exhibition schedule in preparation for the ILF World Championship in Perth, Australia, from July 5-15. The exhibition game was the second half of the 2002 Sport Automotive Potomac Classic. Washington-area senior high school all-stars edged their Baltimore counterparts, 13-12, in overtime in the first game.

Scott Doyle, who led all scorers with four goals, got the U.S. team started with a goal in the first minute of the game. Then, goalie Shane Twomey kept the U.S. attack at bay for the next nine minutes, recording eight saves in the first quarter. The U.S. team scored four goals in the final 11 minutes of the quarter to take a 5-0 first quarter lead, and Steve Dusseau and Kevin Lowe each scored two goals in the second quarter to help the U.S. to an 11-2 lead at halftime.

Darren Lowe scored two of the U.S. team’s six goals in the third period, as the team took a 17-3 lead into the final quarter, and cruised from there. Dudley Dixon led Capital with two goals and one assist. The U.S. outshot Capital 55-28 and controlled 16 of 24 faceoffs.
