US Lacrosse Announces 2002 U.s. Men’s Team’s Exhibition Schedule

Scheduled highlighted by May 26 game with MLL’s New Jersey Pride

BALTIMORE — The 2002 U.S. Men’s Lacrosse Team has announced a six-game exhibition schedule, highlighted by a May 26 game against the New Jersey Pride of Major League Lacrosse. The United States will be competing in the International Lacrosse Federation World Championship in Perth, Australia from July 5-15 and these six games will be its final tune-ups before that event.

“We are very excited to have the 2002 U.S. Men’s Team compete in six exhibitions before its departure to Perth,” said Jody Martin, Men’s Division Director of US Lacrosse. “The team and its coaching staff looks forward to the competition. In particular, we are ecstatic to have the opportunity to play against the New Jersey Pride. It is a special opportunity to have the game’s best players on the field together. I’d like to thank Major League Lacrosse for working with us on this partnership and for its support of our men’s national team program.”

“I am thrilled that the New Jersey Pride has the chance to participate in this exhibition against the U.S. Team,” said Tim Shea, MLL Director of Lacrosse Operations. “Major League Lacrosse is committed to and supports amateur international competition and we worked diligently with US Lacrosse over the last few months to make this great showcase event a reality. I salute Jody Martin and the Pride’s Charlie Shoulberg who were instrumental throughout this process. The event is an excellent preseason opportunity for the Pride to demonstrate their prowess, not only on the field, but as an organization as well.”

The Pride game, which will feature the MLL’s 2-point arc and 45-second shot clock, will be played at Bridgewater Raritan (N.J.) H.S. on the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend, following the NCAA Division II and III championship games that day. Bridgewater Raritan is a short drive from Rutgers University, the site of the NCAA championships. New Jersey went 8-6 in the inaugural MLL season last year and features four players—David Curry, Jesse Hubbard, Peter Jacobs and Reid Jackson—that played on the 1998 U.S. team. Trevor Tierney, a goalie on this year’s U.S. team, is also on the Pride’s roster. The 1998 U.S. team defeated Canada 15-14 in Baltimore to win its fifth consecutive ILF championship.

The remaining five exhibition games will be played against college and post-collegiate club all-star teams from the following areas: Washington, D.C., Hudson Valley (N.Y.), Philadelphia, Northern California and Southern California. The all-star teams are being coordinated by representatives of the respective local US Lacrosse chapters.

US Lacrosse, a 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization, is the national governing body of men's and women's lacrosse.
