U.S. Men's Lacrosse Defeats Iroquois Nationals
22-6
PERTH, Australia (July 6) - The United States Men's Lacrosse
Team opened defense of its International Lacrosse Federation World
Championship with a 22-6 victory over the Iroquois Nationals on
Saturday. Kevin Lowe (Princeton '94) led the U.S. with four goals
and added three assists. His older brother, Darren (Brown '92),
had a game-high six assists.
After a scoreless opening 12 minutes, Scott Doyle (Georgetown '01) got the United States on the board with the first of his two goals and the U.S. used a 7-0 second quarter to open up a 12-1 halftime lead.
The U.S. had a balanced attack, getting at least two goals from six players. Scoring three goals each were current college players Ryan Boyle (Princeton '04) and Bobby Benson (Johns Hopkins '03) and Doug Shanahan (Hofstra '01). Adding a pair of goals for the U.S. were Doyle and Steve Dusseau (Georgetown '02).
The Iroquois Nationals are the only Native American sporting team to compete internationally. The team finished fourth in the 1998 ILF World Championship.
A record 15 nations are competing in this year's ILF championship. The last time the championship was held in Perth was in 1990 when only five nations competed. The first ILF championship was held in 1967 and since 1974 the event has been held every four years. The U.S. has won all but one ILF World Championship, losing to Canada in 1978. The U.S. defeated Canada 15-14 in overtime in Baltimore to win the 1998 title.
The U.S. plays against host Australia on Sunday (July 7).
