Lowes lead U.S. Past Philadelphia 11-8
HAVERFORD, Pa. (June 22) - Kevin Lowe scored three goals
and his brother, Darren, added a goal and three assists as the U.S.
Men's Lacrosse Team defeated the Philadelphia All-Stars 11-8 in
an exhibition game before 1,500 at The Haverford School.
The Philadelphia All-Stars took a 3-2 lead late in the first quarter
on a goal by former Delaware standout Jason Lavey before Kevin Lowe
scored three straight goals to ignite a six-goal U.S. run that gave
it an 8-3 halftime lead. The Philadelphia All-Stars hung tough thanks
to solid goaltending from former Penn State star Billy Hunter and
pulled to within three following goals by Randy Klineman and Lavey
to open the second half. They were able to get no closer and goals
by Doug Shanahan and Michael Powell, the recipients of the two Tewaaraton
Trophies awarded, gave the U.S. an 11-6 lead early in the fourth
quarter to put the game out of reach.
Powell and Steve Dusseau each added two goals for the U.S. team
and goalies Chris LaMonica and Trevor Tierney combined for nine
saves. Lavey, whose older brother, Kevin, is on the U.S. team, led
the Philadelphia All-Stars with two goals and two assists and Klineman
added two goals.
The U.S. completes the Eastern portion of its exhibition schedule
with a 4-0 mark and now heads to California for exhibition games
against the Northern California All-Stars on June 25 and the Southern
California All-Stars on June 27. The U.S. begins play in the 2002
International Lacrosse Federation World Championship on July 6.
