U.S. Men's Lacrosse Team Set For Second Exhibition Game Saturday

Baltimore — The 2002 U.S. Men’s Lacrosse Team, bound for Perth, Australia, July 5-15 for the International Lacrosse Federation (ILF) World Championship, continues its exhibition schedule at 3 p.m. Saturday against the Capital Lacrosse Club All-Stars at Georgetown Prep School in Rockville, Md. The U.S. team is coming off a 14-10 win over the New Jersey Pride of Major League Lacrosse in its exhibition opener Sunday.

The game will be part of the 2002 Sport Automotive Potomac Lacrosse Classic, hosted by the Potomac Chapter of US Lacrosse. At 12:30 p.m., Washington, D.C.-area senior boys high school all-stars will square off against their Baltimore-area counterparts. A minimum donation of $10 will be collected from each car entering the Georgetown Prep campus, and all proceeds will go towards the U.S. team’s trip to Australia.

"We’re grateful to the Potomac Chapter of US Lacrosse for helping us bring a U.S. team exhibition game to the greater Washington, D.C., area," said Chris Hupfeldt, general manager of the 2002 U.S. Men’s Team. "We’re looking forward to being a part of the Potomac Classic. It should be a great day and a great opportunity for lacrosse fans to see their team that will go for gold in Australia."

The U.S. team, seeking its sixth straight ILF championship, will play six exhibition games through June 27 as final tuneups for the ILF tournament.

"The Potomac Chapter of US Lacrosse is happy to host and support the 2002 U.S. Men’s Team. We look forward to hosting future national teams, including the under-19 team and the women’s teams," said Homer Schwartz, secretary of the Potomac Chapter. "I’d like to thank Robert Fogarty of Sport Automotive for helping us put on the Potomac Lacrosse Classic."

Midfielder Scott Doyle (Georgetown University ’01) scored four goals and attackman Darren Lowe (Brown ’92) passed out eight assists to lead the U.S. over the Pride in Bridgewater, N.J. The U.S. also got multiple-goal efforts from attackman Kevin Lowe (Princeton ’94) and midfielder Kevin Cassese (Duke ’03), and Cassese and midfielder Scott Bross (Duke ’01) combined to win 18 of 23 faceoffs as the U.S. led by as many as six in the win. The U.S. was without four collegiate players who were competing for the NCAA Division I championship at Rutgers University over the weekend.

"We did a good job, considering we were missing some people and bumped some other people up. We’re off to a good start," said Jack Emmer, head coach of the U.S. team. "Usually you practice first and then play games. We’re playing four exhibition games and then practicing, so it’s a real credit to these guys. I’m very excited that we could get together and play as well as we did."

The Capital Lacrosse Club All-Stars feature former collegiate All-Americans Dudley Dixon (Johns Hopkins), Lindsey Dixon (Towson), Matt Rienzo (Georgetown), Kyle Sweeney (Georgetown) and Brian Zeller (Maryland).

The U.S. team’s third exhibition game comes Saturday, June 15 against the Hudson Valley All-Stars at Mahopac High School in Mahopac, N.Y.
