U.S. Men's Lacrosse Team Heads To San Francisco
For Exhibition Tuesday
Baltimore The 2002 U.S. Mens Lacrosse Team, bound
for Perth, Australia, July 5-15 for the International Lacrosse Federation
(ILF) World Championship, will travel to San Francisco for an exhibition
game against the Northern California Chapter of US Lacrosse All-Stars
at Kezar Stadium Tuesday. It will mark the U.S. teams fifth
exhibition contest, and its last will be two days later in La Jolla,
Calif., before it departs for Australia.
Faceoff at Kezar Stadium is set for 5:30 p.m. Admission is $5 for
adults and $3 for youth 18 and under. Gates will open at 3:30 p.m.,
and the U.S. team will conduct a clinic for children at 4 p.m.
"Were very pleased we could work out this exhibition
game. Were very lucky to have the U.S. team here, and it will
be a great showcase of lacrosse," said Hank Molloy,
president of the Northern California Chapter of US Lacrosse. "Weve
had good growth in lacrosse in Northern California in the last four
years. As a new outpost, were doing well, but we have a lot
of work to do. This exhibition will give people out here first-hand
exposure to top-rate lacrosse."
The U.S. team is coming off Saturdays 11-8 exhibition win
over the Philadelphia All-Stars and is 4-0 in exhibition play. While
in the Golden State, the team will hold practice daily in addition
to the two exhibition games. The Olympic Club of San Francisco will
host the team at a banquet tonight. US Lacrosse Executive Director
Steve Stenersen will serve as emcee.
"Were looking forward to marketing the great sport of
lacrosse to the growing fan base in Northern California. Its
a great opportunity, not only for the team to get some work in,
but also to expose new people to lacrosse," said Chris Hupfeldt,
general manager of the 2002 U.S. Mens Team. "I want to
thank the Northern California Chapter of US Lacrosse for helping
to organize these events."
The U.S. team, under the direction of Army coach Jack Emmer,
is seeking its sixth straight ILF championship, and will play six
exhibition games through June 27 as final tuneups for the ILF tournament.
Nine collegians highlight the 23-man roster (available at www.lacrosse.org),
making it the youngest team the U.S. has ever fielded in ILF play.
Attackman Darren Lowe (Brown 92) is the only player
on the U.S. team with experience from the 1998 World Championship,
when the U.S. edged Canada, 15-14 in overtime, to win the title
in Baltimore. The U.S. team also includes current Syracuse attackman
Michael Powell, who recently won the Tewaaraton Trophy as
the nations top collegiate player.
The Northern California team features former Princeton University
All-American Lorne Smith, and Matt Ogelsby, a former
All-American at Duke University and current midfielder for the Calgary
Roughnecks of the National Lacrosse League. Ben Andrew, a
three-time letterman at Johns Hopkins University, serves as player/coach.
US Lacrosse, a 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization, is the national
governing body of men's and women's lacrosse.
