Simon Fraser Records Lone Upset at MDIA Championship
ST LOUIS -- The top five seeds advanced in the opening round of play at the 2003 US Lacrosse Men's Division Intercollegiate Associates National Championship. The lone upset on the first day of action was recorded by Simon Fraser University from Burnaby, British Columbia. Simon Fraser, the 1999 runner-up at this event and the No. 11 seed for this year's tournament, edged sixth-seeded Colorado 16-14.
Defending national champion Sonoma State, seeded third, had a tough first round battle with Western Collegiate Lacrosse League rival Cal Poly. The Seawolves edged the Mustangs 10-7 to advance to the quarterfinals where they will meet up with Simon Fraser.
Michigan and BYU defeated Oakland (15-8) and Chapman (17-3), respectively, to set up a showdown in the quarterfinal round for the second straight year. BYU defeated the Wolverines 10-3 in last year's quarterfinal match-up.
The other quarterfinal match-ups will be top-seeded UC-Santa Barbara vs. Florida and second-seeded Colorado State against Texas A&M. UCSB edged the hometown Washington University Bears 15-8 and Florida nipped Minnesota-Duluth 13-11.Colorado State rolled past first-time tournament entrant Boston College 18-2 and Texas A&M edged Chico State 14-12.
