Mid Atlantic Wins High School Division at US Lacrosse National Tournament

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- Jennifer Hauser (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephen's & St. Agnes) scored three goals as Mid Atlantic 1 defeated Upper Atlantic 1 11-4 in the championship game of the Girls Division I bracket at the 70th annual US Lacrosse Women's Division National Tournament at Lehigh University.

Mid Atlantic scored the first two goals of the game, but Upper Atlantic cut the lead to 2-1on a goal by Kate Filippelli (Devon, Pa./Archbishop Carroll). Mid Atlantic stretched the lead to 3-1 on the first of two goals by Kelly Kasper (Eldersburg, Md./Century). Upper Atlantic had several good scoring opportunities to cut the lead back to one, but was unable to convert. Hauser then scored two straight goals to help ignite Mid Atlantic's nine-goal run that stretched the lead to 11-1 before Upper Atlantic scored the final three goals of the game. Shannon Witzel (Pottstown, Pa./Pottstown) led Upper Atlantic with two goals. Megan Bosica (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) also had two goals for Mid Atlantic.

Hauser received the Heather Leigh Albert Trophy, presented annually to the top player in the high school division. Hauser is completing her junior year at St. Stephen's & St. Agnes in Alexandria, Va.

In the Girls Division 2 final, New York 4 and New York 5 played to an 11-11 tie.

In the Club Division, Upper Atlantic 1 captured the Division A championship by virtue of its 8-7 victory over Mid Atlantic 1. Both teams finished with 4-1 records. Pacific 1 won the Division B championship with a 4-0 record, New York 2 won the Division C championship with a 4-0 record, and Mountain 1 won Division D with a 4-0 record.

Other individuals were also honored with awards at the event. Danielle Gallagher received the Beth Allen Award, presented annually to a "highly skilled, creative and disciplined player who consistently makes a positive contribution to the team effort." Gallagher, a 1989 graduate of William & Mary, is a longtime member of the U.S. women's senior team and played with the New York 1 team in the club division of this year's touranment. Official Pat Dillon received the Chance Service Award, which acknowledges significant service to women's lacrosse by an amateur member. Dillon is chair of the women's rules committee and vice president of the US Lacrosse Board of Directors. Lauren Aumiller received the Aimee Willard Award as the outstanding collegiate player at the tournament. Aumiller, who helped Virginia reach the NCAA championship game last weekend and is a finalist for this year's Tewaaraton Trophy, played for Mid Atlantic 1 in the club division.
