US Lacrosse Signs Alex. Brown Charitable Foundation
As U-19 World Championships Sponsor
BALTIMORE US Lacrosse has signed the
Alex. Brown Charitable Foundation as an event sponsor of the 2003
Mens and Womens Under-19 World Championships, as
announced today by Steve Stenersen, Executive Director of
US Lacrosse.
The Alex. Brown Charitable Foundation will contribute
support to the U-19 World Championships, hosted by US Lacrosse June
26-July 5 at Towson (Md.) University. The foundation becomes the
second major sponsor of the U-19 world games, following Buicks
pledge of support in January.
Were very grateful for the Alex. Brown
Charitable Foundations support of the U-19 World Championships,
said Stenersen. Were honored to have the foundation
as one of our nationally recognized partners assist us in hosting
such a global event.
The late Bob
Merrick was such a lacrosse enthusiast and a senior partner
of ours at Alex. Brown we thought to get involved in an event like
this was a good way to remember him, said Tim Schweizer,
a trustee of the foundation. Merrick, a member of the National
Lacrosse Hall of Fame, starred at the Gilman School in Baltimore
and Yale University, in addition to playing on the 1967 U.S. team
that won the first world championship.
US Lacrosse is breaking new ground in international
lacrosse by hosting both the mens and womens U-19 tournaments
simultaneously at the same venue. The International
Lacrosse Federation (ILF) U-19 World Championship began in 1988
in Adelaide, Australia, and was held every four years until switching
to 1999. The U.S. mens team has won each of the four championships.
The International Federation
of Womens Lacrosse Associations (IFWLA) U-19 World Championship
began in 1995 in Haverford, Pa., and is held every four years. The
U.S. womens team has won one championship and finished as
the runner-up in the other.
Ten nations are sending a total of 16 teams to compete
in this years championships. Mens teams that will vie
for the fifth U-19 World Championship include Australia, Canada,
England, Germany, the Iroquois Nation, Japan, South Korea, the U.S.,
and Wales. Australia, Canada, England, Japan, Scotland, the U.S.,
and Wales will send womens teams to the championships.
The Alex. Brown and Sons Charitable Foundation was
established in 1954 and promotes programs which serve the overall
welfare of the communities in which Alex. Brown does business. Deutsche
Bank Alex. Brown provides a comprehensive range of advisory,
financial, research, risk management, and investment services to
corporate and private clients.
