2003 U-19 Championships Recap June 28

U.S. Men Top Canada, 14-10, to Improve to 2-0 in U-19 World Championships

TOWSON, Md.Matt Danowski (Farmingdale, N.Y./Duke) and Patrick Walsh (Wantagh, N.Y./Notre Dame) scored three goals each to lead the United States to a 14-10 win over Canada before 1,500 at Towson Stadium tonight in the 2003 International Lacrosse Federation (ILF) Under-19 World Championships. The Americans improve to 2-0 in round-robin play while Canada drops to 1-1.

Scott Janssen (New Westminster, BC/Mercyhurst) scored three goals to lead Canada, including back-to-back goals at 12:10 and 11:26 of the third quarter, respectively, to give the Canadians a 9-8 lead. Danowski scored on a pass from Drew Thompson (Northport, N.Y./Virginia) at 3:37 and then assisted Bobby Griebe (Bel Air, Md./Towson) 69 seconds later to begin a five-goal run that decided the game. The U.S. improved to 7-0 all-time vs. Canada in U-19 play.

The first half saw Canada jump out to a 3-1 lead behind two goals from Jason Barratt (Center Valley, Pa./MoravianAcademy). Craig Nolan (Plano, Texas/OhioState) then scored twice as part of a 5-0 U.S. run before the Canadians countered with four straight of their own to close out the first half with a 7-6 lead.

Other results from the 2003 Under-19 Men's and Women's World Lacrosse Championships:

Women: U.S. 21, Canada 6Kristen Waagbo (Ellicott City, Md./Duke) scored six goals to pace the U.S. in a 21-9 win over Canada tonight before 575 at Towson Stadium. Krista Pellizzi (North Massapequa, N.Y./Maryland) added four goals and an assist as the U.S. improved to 2-0. Kathleen Miller (Alexandria, Va./Princeton) scored three times to key a 10-1 run to open the game for the Americans. Dana Dobbie scored two goals and added two assists to lead Canada (1-1).

Women: Japan 10, Scotland 4 - Japan held Scotland scoreless in the first half and used four goals from Kaori Senzui to post a 10-4 victory in the IFWLA U-19 tournament. Kirsty Stevenson led Scotland with three goals.

Men: England 11, Iroquois 7 - Charlie Cox and Joe Singleton each scored three goals to lead
England past the Iroquois Nationals 11-7 in the ILF U-19 tournament. Dan Kallaugher won 15 of 20 face-offs for England and goalie James Morris made 11 saves. Iroquois goalie Ross Bucktooth made 17 saves and scored a goal.

Men: South Korea 17, Germany 0 - Brian Park scored five goals and added two assists as
South Korea blanked Germany 17-0. Ben Barchey, Alex Hahn and Dan Moon all had two goals for South Korea (2-0).

Women: Australia 8, England 5 - Australia scored sixth straight second-half goals, rallying from a two-goal deficit to defeat England 8-5. Karen Morton's second goal of the game tied the score 4-4 with 14:51 remaining and Tegan Brown scored just 47 seconds later to put Australia in front for good.
Australia goalie Rebecca Hakendorf made 12 saves. England was led by Lucy Lynch with three goals, including back-to-back goals that put England in front 4-2.
