2003 U-19 Championships Recap July 1

U.S. Men Clinch Top Seed in U-19 Lacrosse Championships

TOWSON, Md. – Matt Danowski scored four goals and Harry Alford made 10 saves while allowing just one goal as the United States beat England 22-3 in the International Lacrosse Federation (men's) Under-19 World Championship at TowsonUniversity. The U.S. completed pool play with a 4-0 record in the Blue Division and received a bye into the semifinal round of the tournament. The U.S. will play the winner of Wednesday's game between Japan and England in the semifinals on Thursday at 5 p.m.

Danowski had a goal and two assists on the U.S. team's first four goals and the U.S. scored the first nine goals of the game before England (1-3) finally got on the board on a goal by Dan Kallaugher with 12:20 remaining in the second quarter. Greg Cohen and Greg Peyser each had three goals for the U.S. while Bobby Griebe, Bill McGlone, Michael DeSantis and Patrick Walsh scored two each. England goalie James Morris made 20 saves.

Other results from the 2003 Under-19 Men's and Women's World Lacrosse Championships:

Women: United States 25, England 5 Kristen Waagbo scored a championships-high nine goals and added two assists as the U.S. improved to 4-0 with a 25-5 win over England tonight. The U.S. set an IFWLA U-19 record with 25 goals in the victory. Waagbo scored her team's first three goals as the U.S. built a 13-4 halftime lead. Leigh Jester handed out five assists and three other Americans tallied hat tricks. Lucy Lynch led England (2-2) with three goals and keeper Karina Sobczyk stopped 13 shots.

Men: Australia 12, Iroquois Nation 11 – Three Australians tallied hat tricks, and goalie Evan Willis stopped a point-blank shot by Brandon Francis with one minute left as Australia (2-2) held off the Iroquois Nation, 12-11, to win the round-robin finale for both teams. Australia secured the third seed in the upcoming six-team ILF tournament and will play South Korea, the sixth seed in a first-round game at 2 p.m. tomorrow. Josh Ardossi, Nick LeGuen, and Mathew Price scored three goals apiece and Australia raced to a 7-1 lead. But Iroquois (0-4) ralled behind five goals from Andrew Lazore, who tied the game at 11 with 8:19 to play. Just over a minute later, Ardossi fed LeGuen for what proved to be the game-winner.

Women: Canada 16, Scotland 2 – Ten Canadians scored in their 16-2 win over Scotland (0-4). Dana Dobbie led the way with three goals, all in the first half, as Canada (3-2) assumed a 9-1 lead. Scotland's Jenny Strathairn made seven saves in the loss. Canada moved into third place with the win.

Women: Japan 15, Wales 7 – Kanako Hattori scored five goals and Kaori Senzui added four to lift Japan (2-3) to a 15-7 win over Wales (1-3). Both players scored four times as part of a 10-0 Japanese run at the end of the first half and beginning of the second. Georgina Reames again led Wales with three goals.
