U-19 Recap, July 2, 2003

U.S. Secures Championship Berth Behind Stanwick

TOWSON, Md. - Coco Stanwick scored eight goals and added three assists as the United States women's U-19 team defeated Japan 24-3 to secure a spot in the International Federation of Women's Lacrosse Associations U-19 World Championship game. The U.S. is now 5-0 in round-robin play and will complete its round-robin schedule on Thursday morning against Wales at 11:30 at Towson Stadium. The U.S. is assured the No. 1 seed and will meet Australia for the championship on Saturday, July 5 at 5 p.m.

After Japan pulled to within 7-2 on a goal by Kanako Hattori with 8:37 remaining in the first half, the U.S. scored the next 14 goals of the game. Kristen Waagbo had five goals and four assists for the U.S. and Rachel Sanford and Jessica Adam each contributed three goals. Rumi Yatabe led Japan (2-4) with two goals.

Other results from the 2003 Under-19 Men's and Women's World Lacrosse Championships:

Men: England 14, Japan 4 - Dan Kallaugher scored four goals and won 14 of 21 faceoffs to lead England (2-3) to a 14-4 win over Japan (3-1) in an ILF tournament first-round game today. Gareth Wilkinson also scored four goals as England advanced to the semifinal round, where it will face top-seeded United States at 5 p.m. Thursday at Towson Stadium. Wilkinson scored twice as part of a 6-0 England run that broke open a 3-2 game. Shun Horiike had two goals and one assist to lead Japan, which will play South Korea at 10:30 a.m. Thursday for the right to face the Iroquois Nation in Saturday's fifth-place game.

Men: Australia 25, South Korea 5 - Australia advanced to the semifinals of the International Lacrosse Federation U-19 tournament behind a 10-point game from attackman Josh Ardossi. Ardossi had three goals and seven assists and Mathew Price added six goals. Nick LeGuen also added four goals and three assists. Australia will meet second-seeded Canada in the semifinals on Thursday, July 3 at 8 p.m. South Korea was led by Ben Barchey with three goals.

Women: Australia 25, Wales 3 - Casey Magor had four goals and five assists as Australia dominated Wales 25-3 to clinch a spot in the championship game of the International Federation of Women's Lacrosse Associations U-19 World Championship. Australia opened the game with a 6-0 run and then went on another 10-goal run after a goal by Wales' Emma Chandler. Sarah Mollison added five goals for Australia and Tegan Brown had four goals.

Women: England 22, Scotland 1 - Eleven different players scored for England in a 22-1 victory over Scotland. Alison Smith led the way with four goals and two assists and Lucy Lynch and Hannah Barnsley each had three goals and two assists. Nikki Curry scored the lone goal for Scotland.

Men: Wales 10, Germany 4 - Wales goalie James Richardson made 18 saves in a 10-4 victory over Germany, allowing his team to advance to the seventh place game on Saturday. Jonathan Harry and Steve McDermott led the Wales' offense with three goals and three assists each. Germany, which got a goal and an assist from Robert Hauffe, finished the tournament in ninth place.
