2003 U-19 Championships Recap July 3

U.S., Canada Advance to Men's Under-19 Final

TOWSON, Md. – Craig Nolan and Matt Danowski scored four goals each as the United States rolled past England 21-6 in the semifinal round of the International Lacrosse Federation Under-19 World Championship. The U.S. will meet Canada in the championship game on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Towson Stadium.

The U.S. (5-0) scored the first five goals of the game and led 12-2 at halftime. Greg Cohen added three goals for the U.S. and Greg Peyser had a big game with two goals and two assists while winning seven of 11 face-offs. U.S. goaltender Harry Alford continued his hot play, making 11 saves while allowing just four goals in 66 minutes of action. England was led by Dan Kallaugher with two goals and goalie James Morris made 12 saves.

Men: Canada 13, Australia 12 – Scott Janssen scored four of his game-high five goals in the second half to rally Canada to a 13-12 win over Australia in the second semifinal of the ILF U-19 World Championship. Josh Ardossi scored three of his four in the first half to lift Australia (3-3) to leads of 6-2 and 9-6 before Janssen reeled off three in a row in a four-minute span of the third quarter to bring Canada (4-1) within 10-9. Janssen then tied the game at 11 with 12:24 to play. Kevin Huntley gave the Canadians their first lead at 12-11 before assisting on Jason Barratt's goal at 7:10 that proved to be the game winner. Ardossi fed Aaron Lawman to bring Australia within 13-12 at 0:36, but Canada was able to run out the clock.

Canada advances to the championship game for the second straight tournament and third time overall. The U.S. defeated the Canadians to win the 1988 and 1999 ILF U-19 championships, both held in Adelaide, Australia.

Men: Japan 20, South Korea 6 Hiroaki Okada and Shun Horiike each had double-digit point games to lead Japan past South Korea 20-6 to advance to Saturday's fifth place game against the Iroquois Nation in the International Lacrosse Federation U-19 World Championship. South Korea will play Wales for seventh place on Saturday.

Okada had three goals and nine assists and Horiike had eight goals and three assists to lead Japan's attack. Okada had the assist of five of Horiike's eight goals. Kotaro Murata also had three goals for Japan, all of them coming the first quarter as Japan jumped out to an 8-1 lead. Dan Chung led South Korea with three goals

Women: United States 18, Wales 0 – Megan Havrilla scored three goals as the United States defeated Wales to finish round-robin play with a perfect 6-0 record. The U.S. will meet Australia in the International Federation of Women's Lacrosse Associations U-19 World Championship on Saturday at 5 p.m. at TowsonUniversity. Krista Pellizzi had two goals and three assists for the U.S. and Coco Stanwick, Leigh Jester and Michelle Menser each had two goals.

Women: Australia 25, Scotland 3Tegan Brown scored five goals as Australia won its fifth straight game, beating Scotland to finish round-robin play with a 5-1 record. Australia will seek to avenge its only loss of the tournament when it plays the United States for the championship on Friday. Hannah Nielsen added four goals and Australia got three goals each from Casey Magor, Sarah Mollison and Amy Hallion. Abby Nicol scored twice for Scotland.

Women: Canada 13, England 9 – Canada used a three-goal spurt midway through the second half to pull away from a 9-8 lead and went on to defeat England 13-9. Dana Dobbie led Canada's attack with five goals, including two of the goals during the critical three-goal run. Katie Smith also had three goals for Canada while Kellie Butcher led England with three goals. Canada and England will meet again on Saturday for third place.
