South Wins National High School Senior Showcase
The South defeated the North 9-8 in the championship game of the US Lacrosse National High School Senior Showcase, an event featuring 96 of the top high school boys' lacrosse players from around the country. The tournament, featuring four regional all-star teams, was held on June 26 at the Anheuser-Busch Sports Center in Fenton, Mo., and was sponsored by Lax World and STX.
In the championship game, the South led 9-6 before the North rallied to pull within one goal and the North had a final shot hit off the goal as time expired. Alex Haynie (Northwales, Pa./Germantown Academy/Princeton) led the South with three goals and Ryan Kelly (Virginia Beach, Va./Cape Henry Collegiate/Virginia) added two goals. The North got two goals each from Justin Simon (Canaan, N.H./Holderness/Bates), Matt Nelligan (Rowley, Mass./Pingree/Ithaca) and Brendan Loftus (Watertown, N.Y./Immaculate Heart/Syracuse).
In the first semifinal, Nelligan scored four goals and goalie Stefan Schroder (Kirkville, N.Y./East Syracuse Minoa/Onondaga CC) made 13 second half saves to lead the North to a 15-7 victory over the East. Simon added two goals and an assist for the North. Midfielder Jack Riley (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood/Virginia) led the East with two goals and an assist.
In the second semifinal, the South nipped the West by a 12-10 score behind three goals from Tim Atkins (West Chester, Pa./Malvern Prep/Villanova). Haynie added two goals and two assists and Robert Schneider (Malvern, Pa./Malvern Prep/Princeton) had two goals and one assist for the South. The West got two goals each from Pat Zeis (St. Louis, Mo./Christian Brothers/St. John's), Alan Chirls (Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island/Villanova), Ryan Brent (Trabuco, Calif./Mission Viejo/Sonoma State) and Clint Brakebill (Chattanooga, Tenn./McCallie/Towson).
In the consolation game, Michael Carrington (Houston, Texas/Episcopal/Southern Methodist) scored five goals to power the East past the West 20-5. Matt McBride (Ridgewood, N.J./Delbarton/Georgetown) and Evan Blue (Delray Beach, Fla./St. Andrews/Massachusetts) each added three goals and an assist for the East. Brady Williams (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington/Gettysburg) had a pair of assists for the West.
Each team named a most valuable player and sportsmanship award.
