Sue Heether Named Head Coach of U.S. Women's National Team

Sue HeetherBALTIMORE — Sue Heether, a member of three World Cup championship teams, has been named as the new head coach of the United States women’s lacrosse team. Heether’s appointment begins immediately and will run through the 2009 International Federation of Women’s Lacrosse Associations World Cup.

"I am very excited about Sue's appointment as our national team coach," said Chip Rogers, chair of the US Lacrosse Women’s Division National Teams Committee. "Her international playing experience and success at that level provides a solid foundation as we look ahead to the 2007 Under-19 World Championships and the 2009 IFWLA World Cup. Sue is a consummate student of the game and her leadership will make her a great ambassador for our U.S. national teams.

"I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to serve the national team program as a coach," said Heether. "I have always considered it an honor and a privilege to represent the United States as a player and am excited by the challenge of coaching the team. It will be a privilege to work with athletes at the highest level. There is a great base from which to build here at US Lacrosse and I look forward to taking that base and expanding it. I hope to put together a team of coaches, athletes, trainers and fans that will work to compete at the very highest level of the game and continue a proud tradition of honoring the game and the high standards set by every team that has gone before us."

A three-sport athlete (field hockey, lacrosse, swimming) at Loyola College, Heether earned first team All-America honors as a goaltender for the Greyhounds in 1990. She still holds the school’s records for saves in a season (312) and career (826).

Heether continued her playing career with the U.S. national team beginning in 1990. She played goalie for the U.S. teams that won World Cups in 1993, 1997 and 2001 and was a member of the U.S. training team for the 2005 World Cup. As a member of the national team, Heether has toured in Australia, Canada, England, Japan, Scotland and Wales.

In addition to playing for the national team, Heether began a coaching career after her graduation from Loyola. She served as an assistant coach at Loyola (1991), Harvard (1992) and Notre Dame Prep (1993-95) before becoming the head coach at St. Mary’s College (Md.) where she compiled a record of 17-7 in two seasons. In 1997 she opened Sports Her Way, a successful women’s specialty equipment and apparel store and continues to serve in the role of president for the company. She has also served a stint as an assistant coach for the U.S. Developmental team and currently volunteers with an inner-city lacrosse program at William Paca Elementary School in Baltimore City.

Heether was inducted into the Loyola College Athletic Hall of Fame in 1995 and into the US Lacrosse Greater Baltimore Chapter Hall of Fame in 2004.

Heether replaces Sue Stahl as coach of the U.S. Elite and World Cup teams. Stahl served as the head coach for 17 years, leading the program to four World Cup championships (1989, 1993, 1997 and 2001) and one runner-up finish (2005).

The US Lacrosse Women’s Division National Teams Committee is responsible for the oversight of the for the U.S. Under-19, Elite and Developmental teams.
