2006 U.S. Men's National Team Tryout Information
BALTIMORE — US Lacrosse recently announced application procedures for current collegiate, amateur post-collegiate club and Major League Lacrosse (MLL) players wishing to apply for an invitation to try out for the 2006 U.S. Men’s National Team.
The tryouts, which are open to the public, will take place from June 13 to 16, 2005, at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). The U.S. Men’s Team will compete in the International Lacrosse Federation (ILF) World Championship in London, Ontario, Canada, from July 13 to 22, 2006.
The team tryout is invitation only. Interested players had to fill out a player application before March 19, 2005. Approximately 120 players will be invited in May to the tryout. A 24-person Player Selection Committee, consisting of current collegiate and post-collegiate club coaches, will select the final 23-man roster following the tryout.
"We’re very pleased to have worked out an agreement with Major League Lacrosse to expand the talent pool from which to select the 2006 U.S. Men’s Team," said Larry Quinn, chair of the 2006 U.S. Men’s Team Player Selection Committee. "The availability of collegiate, post-collegiate and MLL players at the tryout should bolster our chances at successfully defending our 2002 world championship."
"We wanted to go the extra mile for our players to ensure they had the chance to play for the U.S. Team at the world championship," said MLL Commissioner David Gross. "We want to do everything in our power to afford our players this wonderful and important opportunity."
The U.S. has won six straight and eight of nine ILF championships since the event’s 1967 inception. John Desko, three-time NCAA Division I champion coach at Syracuse University, will serve as head coach of the 2006 U.S. Men’s Team.
