North Defeats West in National High School Senior Showcase Championship
FENTON, Mo. — The North team jumped out early on the West and never looked back in the June 25 championship game of the 2005 US Lacrosse National High School Senior Showcase at the Anheuser-Busch Center just outside of St. Louis, Missouri. The North team had 12 different goal scorers in the 16-8 championship game victory. The North's Kenney Nims (Watertown, N.Y.), who will attend Syracuse University, was named the team MVP as he scored two goals and one assist in the championship. The North had three other players score two goals including Jim Connolly (North Andover, Mass.), Brendan Moses (Medfield, Mass.) and Dan Hardy (Tully, N.Y.).
The West offense was led by Michael Farinelli (Carlsbad, Calif.) and Chris Taylor (Mercer Island, Wash.) who both scored two goals apiece in the loss. West goaltender Austin Konkel (Aurora, Colo.), who will attend the University of Denver, made 12 saves and the championship game. Konkel's teammate Paul Collera (Cincinnati, Ohio) made seven saves in goal for the West in the championship and was named team MVP. Collera will attend Gettysburg College this fall.
In the consolation game the South rebounded from its 24-5 semifinal loss earlier in the day to the North by defeating the East 12-10. South team MVP Garvey Heiderman (Ocean City, Md.), who will attend the University of Pennsylvania, led the South with two goals and one assist. The South's Tim Fanning (Marietta, Ga.) scored a team high three goals. East team MVP Max Pomper (Huntington, N.Y.), headed to the University of Virginia, scored a team high three goals in defeat. In the other semifinal game the West defeated the East 10-9.
Over 275 players and families attended the awards banquet which honored the achievements of both the individual players and teams as a whole. Georgetown University men's lacrosse coach Dave Urick was the featured guest speaker. Urick's wit entertained the entire room while simultaneously offering sound advice to the players for their transition into college.
