US Lacrosse Women's Division National Tournament Results
BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- Laura Shane made two point blank saves in the final 1:05 of the game to preserve a 7-7 tie for the Club All-Stars in an exhibition game against the United States World Cup Training Team to wrap up the first day of action at the US Lacrosse Women's Division National Tournament. The tournament, sponsored by Harrow Sports, Yolo Sportswear and the Heather Leigh Albert Foundation, features 65 teams competing in three divisions and is being held at Lehigh University.
The U.S. jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead, but the All-Stars answered with three straight goals to take a 3-2 lead. Neither team led by by more than one goal after that point. After an errant clear attempt by the U.S., Kelly Coppedge scored to give the All-Stars a 7-6 lead with 11:10 remaining. Kelly Amonte Hiller, who coached Northwestern to the NCAA Division I championship last weekend, scored the equalizer for the U.S. with 3:05 to play on a nice inside feed from Katie Chrest. The U.S. had two great scoring opportunities to win the game in the closing minute, but Shane came up with the big saves.
Amonte Hiller led the U.S. with two goals and an assist. Courtney Connor, a former U.S. Team member, had two goals and an assist for the All-Stars and Crysti Foote had two goals.
In tournament action during the day, the U.S. went a perfect 3-0 in Pool 1 of the Club Division. The U.S. beat Great Lakes 11-2, New England 14-2, and Mid Atlantic 5-3.
In the Senior High School All-Star game, the Blue Team defeated the White Team 18-4 behind two goals and two assists from Megan Mosenson. After the Blue Team scored the first two goals, Jennifer Holden scored a goal for the White Team to cut the lead to 2-1 with 14:14 remaining in the 20-minute first half, but the Blue Team closed the first half with an 8-1 run.
Bunny O'Reilly, Mallory Tornetta, Mary Kate Casey, Molly Ortolano and Amanda Longobucco all added two goals for the Blue Team. Holden led the White Team with a goal and an assist.
In the high school division, Mid Atlantic 1 won all three of its games in pool play and can clinch a trip to the semifinals with a win over Upper Atlantic 5 in Sunday morning's game. Mid Atlantic 1 has won four consecutive championships in the top flight in the high school division. Play was delayed for approximately 90 minutes due to rain and lightning in the afternoon.
