Final Results: 2005 US Lacrosse WDNT
BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- Kate Fauth (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes) scored two goals and added an assist during a five-goal run in the second half to help Mid Atlantic 1 capture the Division 1 High School championship at the US Lacrosse Women’s Division National Tournament at Lehigh University. Mid Atlantic 1 defeated New York 1 by a score of 13-7.
New York jumped out to an early 3-1 lead as Traci Landy (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) scored back-to-back goals, but Mid Atlantic rallied for a 5-3 halftime lead. Mid Atlantic scored the first two goals of the second half, but New York responded with a three-goal run to pull within 7-6 on a goal by Kristen Taylor (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) with 14:00 left to play. Mid Atlantic then pulled away with its five-goal run to capture the championship for the fifth straight year.
Carter Foote (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes) led Mid Atlantic with four goals and Megan Bosica (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) added three goals and an assist. Landy led New York with four goals and Taylor had two goals and an assist.
In the Division 2 championship game, New York 5 defeated Mid Atlantic 8 11-9.
Following the tournament, Bosica was honored as the 2005 recipient of the Heather Leigh Albert Award as the outstanding player in the high school division. Bosica earned the award for the second straight year, becoming just the second player so honored. Sheehan Stanwick, who went on to become a three-time All-American at Georgetown, was the award in 1996 and 1997. The other finalists for the award were Jennifer Russell (Andover, Mass./Brooks School) of Lower New England, Danielle Kachulis (Parker, Colo./Kent Denver) of Mountain, Shaylyn Blaney (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) of New York and Missy Sunseri (Mt. Lebanon, Pa./Mt. Lebanone) of Upper Atlantic.
Several other individuals were also honored at the tournament. Sue Stahl, head coach of the U.S. World Cup team and the head coach at Old Dominion University, received the Nancy Chance Service Award. Sue Heether, a member of the U.S. World Cup Training Team, received the Beth Allen Award. Kelly Berger of James Madison received the Aimee Willard Award as the top collegiate player at the tournament.
Berger helped lead Mid Atlantic 1 won the Pool 1 championship in the Club Division. Mid Atlantic 1 went undefeated against championship-eligible teams and played the U.S. World Cup Training Team to a tight 5-3 decision. The U.S. team went 6-0 in the tournament. Southeast 1 went undefeated to win the Pool 2 championship.
